So, I'm an absolute dinosaur. That is all I can say,

I played all the Super Nintendo RPGs. Final fantasy and ChronoTrigger. I was Rydia for Halloween at age 9, despite no one having a clue as to what I was. After Super Nintendo, I never played anything.

I want to get into gaming (again?) But I want to make sure I might like something before I buy anything. I know I have no idea what I am doing but if someone could steer me in the right direction as to what I like, it would be greatly appreciated!!!!

To start, you need to figure out, are you just trying to relive the nostalgia or find something new and exciting that you wanna get into? If you’re looking for a modern game, try to seperate into genres, then just look up games in those genres and have fun.

There are also a WHOLE bunch of free game for every platform so you could just look up “free to play games” and then pick which ones seem interesting for your platform

Octopath Traveller 1 & 2 might interest you if you liked Final Fantasy before. you could go on YouTube to check out some gameplays and see if it's something you might like.

I think you need to decide what you are looking from games first. There is a lot of good games in each genre, but some of them give nearly opposite experience, like doom eternal and animal crossing. Also it is good to decide what platform (or platforms) are you gonna use: PC, PS, Xbox, Nintendo or something otherbecause each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages, also some games are exclusive for some consoles or have no ports to them.

What would you suggest for someone who only knows Super Nintendo? I appreciate any help!

Well, consider the fact that I was born after end of support of super Nintendo...

If you want ability to modificate your games, or some niche products, or more freedom I guess, then use PC. I also like mouse+keyboard controls more than controller, but I think it is mostly just my taste. Downsides of that platform is that there many PS AAA-exclusives that unavailable on PC or have really bad ports. Also hardware is quite expensive and it is much more hard to choose it. But it also means that you can build whatever PC that covers your needs. It also might be that you already have desktop or laptop. But second isn't good idea for long term gaming due to cooling problems, and you probably won't be able to run modern AAA games. However, many indie games are still available. The way to buy games on pc is steam. There are other different game stores like epic game store, but steam is the mostly used one. Just google it and I think it will be first results.

Nintendo switch is portable console. It not so powerful as other ones, but you can easily take it anywhere (but there is also steam deck that relatively recently came out with full support of steam shop, so if you want mobile console for games from PC, then steam deck is also good choice). But it has a lot of exclusive for Nintendo games, which can be played only with it. Not really into Nintendo stuff, but you can also check their store and site or I guess any YouTube video which more properly describe all pros and cons of that console.

PS and Xbox are I guess the most famous consoles. Modern generation have similar hardware properties (PS5 and Xbox series X/S), but ps has its VR set (which of course bought separately) if you want to play VR games (there is not a lot of them though). The main difference between them that PS have a lot of good exclusives, but Xbox has its famous game pass, which you can subscribe on and it will give you access to giant library of games that also regularly updates with new ones.

I cannot suggest you a lot of games, because my taste in them probably really differ from yours and I really not into modern AAA games, neither any Nintendo. There is a lot of games that you can suggest any game store, just use right filter (or don't use one all). Again, there is a lot differences between the last of us, horizon, assassin's creed, resident evil and factorio, rimworld, hearts of iron 4, minecraft, terraria or any games I usually play. I can recommend though outer wilds - great chill exploration game and may be hollow knight, which is a metroidvania set in dead kingdom of bugs with incredible atmosphere and bosses, however starting with hk isn't the best decision that you can made. It is good game, but quite challenging and don't have usual quests that will guide you to whatever you need to do (the game literally starts with you landing into some kind of cavern with no knowledge of what's going on and you won't have any relatively complete ideas on it untill midgame, but as one of characters you meet at the beginning says, "Getting lost and finding your way again is a pleasure like no other. " )

Sorry if this isn't helpful, but mad props for the Rydia costume. She remains one of my favorite FF characters to this day.

If you're looking for a good JRPG on Steam, I would highly recommend Grandia II. Good balance of challenge and fun, some voice acting, great soundtrack, and characters you can get attached to. It's from the Dreamcast era, so it's a little dated, but if you enjoyed old school JRPGs, it may be right up your alley.

Are you looking for general video game suggestions, or are you looking for suggestions of modern games similar to Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger?

Yeah, I suppose similar. Something that can pull me in, in the same way.

Since you mentioned Chrono Trigger, you might be interested in Sea of Stars. It isn't out yet but is heavily inspired by CT and RPGs of its time. They even have one of the music composers from CT doing the music. Welcome back to gaming, and I hope you find something fun.

If you're into JRPGs from the super nintendo era, you could investigate emulation. Plenty of JRPs that werent available in the US now have fan translations. Theres also romhacks that turns your favorite game into something else entirely. Like theres randomizer for FF4-5-6 (to you it might be called FF2 and FF3 !) that randomizes characters u get, chests and bosses, lots of fun. Theres a rom hack where you play a combined version of a link to the past and super metroid. We live in a wonderful world.

If you used to jam the SNES, you'd probably have a great time with the Switch. The catalogue of old games (which you may know from the past) from NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and now Gameboy/GBA is really large and quality now imo. It comes with the Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Switch also has, at least in my opinion, some of the best modern games in those old series. Mario Odyssey and 3D World, Metroid Dread, DKC Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

If you wanted to go *pure* nostalgia, you can get a SteamDeck and install like every emulator up to xbox 360/ps3. It's basically a small linux PC so it can be trickier to set up, but really is not bad. It could also play newer PC games from Steam, which was more the point of it. Like you can play the God of War and Horizon PS4 ports on it. Those PS4 exclusives are excellent titles.

TL;DR imo the very best way you could dip your toes back into gaming, with the best combination of new & old/nostalgic, you'd do well with a Nintendo Switch.

I would recommend going for games on a PC. If you don't have one, you can buy a mediocre laptop and just roll with it. It's cheaper and easier to get your hands on than a console. Despite the lack of exclusive titles, there's just a huge amount of games from history that you can access on platforms like Steam or GoG. Steam also has a lot of demos and you can refund almost any game you have less than 2 hrs played on without question.

Here are some of my suggestions...

If you loved Final Fantasy from the days of SNES, get Final Fantasy 10. This game is considered by many to be peak Final Fantasy. The HD Remaster is available on Switch, Playstation, or PC.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a game that's similar to Chrono Trigger in many ways.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Great turn based RPG with plenty of silliness. Decent story too.

If you want a VERY lore heavy series of games, check out the Legend of Heroes games. It starts with Trails into the Sky, followed by Trails to Azure, Trails of Cold Steel (this one is easiest to get into), and Trails into Reverie (coming soon). It is a very slow burn though. Part 1 of each subseries (that's an entire 25 hr game) tends to just be setup for the main story.

The Persona games (Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royal) are a little more difficult and half the game is a simulation of a high school dating sim life while the other half is more standard RPG. But, great games overall.
