Sonic Frontiers is solid, but it just doesn't feel anywhere near as expansive as SA2, despite having an open world. Honestly, the secret paths through the speed stages in SA2 feel almost like an open world, but more streamlined. That fit better with Sonic, in my opinion. The open world in Frontiers just served to ruin any pacing the game had.

I think the top one was more 30 years ago wasn't it? Maybe longer. Can't remember it's been a while

I played Sonic Frontiers more recently, but I did play SA2 a few years back on Steam. Sonic Frontiers takes up more physical space, but a lot of it was just that... space. That's what I meant by it not feeling as expansive. Then there's the Chao garden.

I guess part of the problem is also the different goals for each stage. Beating the level, beating it with a certain number of rings, and beating it with the red star rings typically happened on the first run. Outside of 1-2, the speed only took a couple tries, too. I mean, the mission for some of these is to clear it with like 20 rings...

Burnstryk t1_j2axdti wrote

I do think SA3 is a lot more likely now with Sonic Frontiers. The game has multiple callbacks to Sonic Adventure/Adventure 2 especially in character and story progression. I feel like the vibe is that of an Adventure game.

In the first map, Sonic outright mentions the Chao Garden and how the islands don't have the right environment for them.

I don't care if it is or isn't. As someone with a healthy underatanding of the passage of time and game history, I am fully aware that 20 years ago was mid-Gamecube/PS2/XBox er, not the q6 bit generation.

For me they were both 20 years ago because I didn't get to play the Megadrive/Genesis classics (despite growing up in that time) until I got Sonic Mega Collection on the GameCube.

GameCube was killing it with the Sonic titles really. Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Sonic Heroes all rocked!

I'm not ready for everything that I loved playing, to turn 20 years old every passing year. Hell, even things I've loved playing now, are creeping up even 10 years ago.

Play the games while you still can, not like they'll expire (depends), but life is going to be ticking away.

I remember getting this as a free game when I got my Genesis. Yes, consoles typically came with a free game that wasn't a premium, plus, or special edition. The earlier models came with altered beast and I really wanted that over sonic but a free game is a free game.

2

Mistersinister1 t1_j2ej88p wrote

Yeah, they were really taking advantage of video games popularity after the nes was such a hit. The technology really took off once there was a lot of competition. Healthy competition brought us the Sega CD in 91 and then eventually to the N64, more disc based consoles started to pop up. hard to believe that the original playstation came out in the states in '95. I was just entering highschool, yeah that makes me feel old. But it really felt like after that it just exploded with the variety of different consoles. It's too bad that the Dreamcast couldn't hold a candle to ps2 release, I really think it would have been the superior machine but the ps2 set that benchmark and the industry hasn't slowed down since.

Not surprised. It helps that they probably implemented the same engine if I were to guess. At that point it must have been clear that the Dreamcast needed a miracle.
