try a little lighter fluid like the kind for filling zippo lighters (not butane), or try a little paint thinner

Lighter fluid is actually very gentle. Retail trick for cleaning up display items, esp electronics (ex Radio sHack employee).

Sure, but depending on the type of plastic in the earcups, those solvents could disintegrate it, while wood is fine

Ya you’re right to point that out. if it’s plastic based faux leather, a solvent on too long could damage it
