Your brain gets used to the sound, this is why the concept of burn in exists to a degree. If you own mulitiple iems you would know it takes sometime to get used to the sound when swapping between them.

Just had the same experience with my new IEMs. Some here call it mental burn in and it’s definitely a real thing.

This happens to me each time with my ER4's I'm like man these sound thin. After a bit then I'm like "woah these are good"

Maybe you had a bad reference and a well tuned pair of earphones sound bad to you at first, or you had a good reference and the earphones are badly tuned but you get used to the sound after a while, and now that becomes your reference which is a bad one.

Or you never had a good reference and the new earphone won't improve the situation. Hence you don't know what a well tuned earphone sounds like. You still get used to it.

These are your possibilities.

I’ve always had the opposite experience! When I first get new headphones they sound excellent but after a few months of heavy listening my ears “adjust” and it becomes the new normal. Only switching out between different pairs seems to keep my brain from adjusting!

Because it is not tuned for your ears. The best headphones/iem (or the one tuned for your eara) are the ones that sound right the first time you put it on. Same with a speaker. And that's why eq exists to make it sound right to your ears, than your ears trying to adjust to it.

Even though i believe burn in plays a huge part. I also believe that our brain has its own eq (the way we would like to hear and pay attention to the music) for the past hp. When that changed with new hp, everything changed drastically in the brain.

Your brain gets used to whatever garbage it's been hearing so often something clearly better needs a bit of time to start working. Usually beginners in the hobby are used to very iffy headphones and when they get an HD600 or HD650 and are deeply unimpressed because they can't appreciate the subtle qualities like balance and timbre. It's like someone who's only eaten really salty and sweet food so actually good food feels bland at first.
