I let my fiancee borrow my HD660s to try out especially for gaming since I've been boasting about how good they are. Lets just say it was difficult to get them back. He games competitive shooters and was using some cheap earbuds but, after trying out my headphones he got to experience what its actually like to hear footsteps. For music too he enjoyed them a lot. So santa came and gifted him his own pair... With a hat :)

The hd660s are a headphone that is special in my cheesy opinion. I own better headphones (well closed back) and i have tried more expensive open backs like the focal clear mg, utopia, HD800s, Meze Empyrean. They all perform technically better, with some having way better imaging and dynamics but, when i go back to the hd660s i dont feel like they are trash after hearing the big boys. I love how they are cheap because I dont have to worry about handling them super delicately, its anxiety free. The sound is so non fatiguing and non offensive. Its my daily headphone and it literally disappears on my head for hours on end. Thing is, we all want the best of the best headphones. I see myself with the focal utopia in the future however, because of how expensive it is, I might just save for dedicated listening sessions. I would worry about using them too much that i kight break them. Same with any other super expensive headphone. The price adds mental stress. Maybe the issue is that headphones are too expensive for what they are really worth nowadays. I would never pay 3K for headphones. I will only buy flagships second hand with big discounts. Because, ultimately i will get a 100 times better listening experience on my stereo system which costs less. So a super expensive headphone is in my eyes, something i would buy if i had too much extra money laying around. But i still want one just because of the upgrade urge XD Basically, can companies stop overpricing headphones?

The meze 109 pro does look interesting, its not massively expensive and could be a potential upgrade in the far future. Im not in a hurry though. HD660s is chad.

Thank you for reading my rambling. I hope I made some sense XD

More like birthday which sits nicely in the middle of the year. I got the JDS element 3 for my own headphones but I might look at something cheaper for him since he isnt as invested as I am in audio. The Audioquest dragonflys look interesting. Or I might go see what my local hifi stores have on sale. For now he is happy about how it sounds and it dosnt sound terrible plugged straight into his PC as a temporary thing.

I recently posted a question on r/HeadphoneAdvice about the HD 660s vs Clear OG, and I think your comment pretty much summarize what I wanted to hear about them :)

Definitely want to try the HD 660s for those exact same reasons

I read your post and I think the HD660s would be the perfect choice. I tried the 560s in store and the 660 are much better. More detailed without being a headache. Really good imaging too and instrument separation. Its the best Goldilocks headphone. Definitely give them an audition in store.

Once you get the headphones you can think about an amp/dac so that they sound their best but you can live with plugging it straight into your pc. And really you dont need anything expensive. Look for something good and cheap or go second hand. Good luck on your search!

A little off topic, but since you're using masculine pronouns for him, the spelling should be fiancé jsyk! Fiancée is the feminine version in French, so a woman to whom someone is engaged to be married, with fiancé being the masculine form. Regardless, great headphones and a great gift!

My phone auto corrected the spelling but i did not know there was a difference haha. That's my English ignorance there. Ill be mindful of using the right spelling in the future :).

i totally agree with the point that decent stereo systems is superior to headphone no matter what the headphone might be, recently i sold one of my expensive headphone to help fund my new stereo system which is a diy kit my friend is currently building it for me, can't wait for it to be done and give it a listen in my room, anyway i like the HD 660s tho i currently have the 6xx which i adore for its relaxing sound signature

That's really great to hear :) I'll probably visit Sennheiser showroom next week and give them a try, looks exactly what I'm looking for

As for the DAC/amp, I've got the Loxjie A30 (mostly for my passive speakers) and a Tempotec Sonata III, but planning to get a Topping L30II/E30II or the Topping DX3 in near future

Thank you so much for your response :)

I really love using HD 660S, it's not perfect but it's already good for every music that I listen to. For gaming, I play DOTA2 and CS:GO, yeah I can say it has a really good soundstage but I think cheaper headphone can cover that up too.

Overall, I really recommend this for normies who just want to use it daily, or for audiophile who love to listen details.

Like you've said, while the HD800s etc' really do everything better, they did make me appreciate how stupidly good the HD6xx line is especially with EQ, they're definitely not $1300 apart (bought my HD800 used, just needed earpads replacement).

You're awesome and wish you both a long, happy and healthy life together.

The Audioquest Dragonflies are a bit outdated and overpriced considering what you can buy nowadays, and not much of an upgrade over some onboard solutions (guessing he has a decent mobo since you mentioned he plays competitively).

Put it on hold until you can afford something a bit nicer if he ends up not satisfied with onboard, but also no need to exaggerate with how good entry level dac/amps are nowadays.

That's awesome. I always enjoy seeing people experience the miracle of high-end audio for the first time. The 109 Pro is quite the looker, and sounds amazing as well. Given how robust and serviceable it is, and Meze's top notch customer support, I'd say it's a complete package. I absolutely love mine.

i have the HD660S going on 4 years! Just got the HD800S about 3 months ago but I still find myself going back to the 660s from time to time mainly for hiphop. My plan was to sell them after a few sessions compairing both and I just couldn't let them go. 800s is like a banana split with all the toppings. But sometimes you just want vanilla with chocolate syrup.

The parts for HD650 are hardly available, I had to pay for a whole headband assembly just to change my broken "hinge".

Haha, I think the Audiophile world distorted my view XD. I got it for £350 which to be fair, is ''cheap'' compared to headphones I was looking at for over £1000.

I used to with "peace" PEQ but after I thought I like the EQ I went back and I prefer it stock EQ setting. Sometimes I might EQ the bass for the HD800s but thats it. HD660S I don't EQ at all.
