I see people biking in the streets but never see any locked up. Where do you park your bike when you have to stop to go into a store or something?

I recently moved from Pittsburgh and there were similar numbers of bikers but had bike racks and bikes chained up everywhere. Is there a reason people don't chain them up in JC? Is there a theft problem or something?

I didn't know Pittsburgh was so civilized. Yes, your bike will be stolen sooner rather than later if you leave it locked up outside.

Rule number one about owning a bike here: spend more on the lock than the bike.

Totally, should spend about 3 months salary on a lock if you want to keep her around

There are lots of folks using Citibike as well. Those have dedicated racks. I know Pittsburgh has a bike share system, but my sense is that it is relatively small. The other thing is that the sidewalks are pretty narrow around here, and not too many businesses understand how many of their customers and employees arrive on bikes, so they don't make racks a priority. So the bikes kind of get locked up all over the place instead of concentrated in racks.

I see lots of bikes parked outside downtown locked to metal fences and sign posts. Don't know how people do security beyond a good lock, but imagine people are using trackers.

We keep our bikes in our basement. I think lots of the newer buildings have their own dedicated bike storage too- my cousin owns a condo in JC and that’s where she keeps hers. Neither of us live downtown.

Oh my bad! Not sure how I missed that.

I chain my bike outside wherever I’m going, which…is probably what everyone does.

I lock my bike in front of the store or somewhere near by. I always like to use a street sign

For me, if I'm gonna need to lock up for more than about ten minutes, I'll use Citi Bike instead. My bike is mostly for recreation or if I need to carry a lot more than the shitty baskets on the Citi Bikes.

I've got an old giant escape which I lock outside. I can see it out my window and I've had to shout down at young teenagers I just happened to spot going past one night who saw it and came back pulling at it. My apartment is on the third floor and has a very tight carry up so I leave it there when I'm working in NY and use it to go to Grove St. I've had the seat and post stolen so now need to remove that. It's lasted the passed two years, depending on how busy the street is I think, putting them off a little. Having moved here from London I can say jersey city is more secure than there, it's crazy bad but then biking to work is definitely a bigger thing there are so much more bikes around. A good lock and be sure to secure the back wheel if not even both and cross your fingers

In addition to things others have mentioned (use Citibike, lock up close to the business you're visiting): some businesses will let you bring your bike inside. Just ask... some places may give you the nod.

Also, Jersey City made a deal with Ooonee to operate 30 secure bike parking locations around the city: probably smaller versions of the one at Journal Square. When this was announced about a year ago, these were supposed to start opening by the end of 2022. I haven't heard anything about this recently... hopefully the plan is still on track.

yes theft is a problem, lock smartly and you'll be fine. store bikes in apartments when not in use

Can't store it in an apartment when you stop at a store. That's what OP is asking.

I do not lock my bike in Jersey City.

For online pickups, I take my bike with me inside. The way I see it if stores allow shopping carts bikes are okay (though if I were shopping I would only take a bike with a kickstand just for everyone's convenience).

For restaurant almost all takeout places allow them and some may allow sit in if there is space available. Just ask.

If you rent in a large “luxury” building they usually have bike racks

Well to be fair, OP has a very relevant and valid question, and I'd also like to see a discussion about it. But countless folks coming in here answering the wrong question doesn't help the discussion.

Have a great day :-)
