Idk about the rest of the country but definitely better than NYC. Every interaction I've had with NYPD has been negative and they are straight up pieces of shit. JCPD was helpful a few times when I've had flat tires or some type of car trouble. If it's anything involving solving crime they're useless

In terms of getting things done - worse.

In terms of -on average- not being antagonistic and problematic - better.

I'd say they are pretty incompetent but not in a way actively dangerous like some regions. Relatively harmless. I've felt the average opinion is "I don't even know what the JCPD does besides sit around."

A mixed bunch. Some of them are lazy and rude. Some of them are principled and responsible. In general, they're not trying to ruin your life or kill you, so I'd say above average.

They just don’t do much. Not a lot of bad, not a lot of good.

This one is tricky to answer, coming from an over policed town where DWB was real and I got pulled over for nothing a lot this is heaven. But sometimes it feels like you have to commit murder to get their attention.

Would you? Enforce laws: you’re racist. Sit back and enjoy the show? You do nothing, despite everyone under the sun still calling you racist.

It’s hilarious reading these polls. Mind you I’m not much of a fan of cops but they’re necessary.

The police need to be more aggressive. Jersey City has way too many Amazon packages being stolen.

They literally don’t do shit. A few months ago I was driving. The light was Turing red and the car in front of me blew the red light, there was a cop sitting in his cop car, saw it happen, he shrugged his shoulders and then went back to look at his phone.

Cops in general can’t do much and they’ll tell you that to manage your expectations. Preemptive aid isn’t in their rule book so a crime actually has to be committed in order for them to open an investigation. By then, your package is stolen, or your car has been damaged, or someone has mugged you. These are the average complaints while they manage more effort for the infrequent complex cases like an active shooter.

Below average and they pull in a median of $120K annually, and that’s not even going into pension cost. But that’s not a problem according to this sub.

The ONE time I called them in my 20 years living here they gaslighted me saying a woman screaming bloody murder at some guy assaulting her in a parked car was “usual boyfriend/ girlfriend activity”. That tells you a lot about how they think women should be treated.
Ladies, we are on our own in this town. Better learn to defend yourselves .

The handful of interactions I’ve had or seen, mostly gives a vibe a lot of the force still thinks it’s the bad old days of the 90s. Petty theft stuff never gets anywhere (it took 6 weeks to file the damn report, I don’t need you to solve it just a report number for an insurance claim!), but on the other hand they let most things go (for better or worse)

JC cops were brave and effective enough to put down the violent terrorist attempt to kill as many Jews as possible in 2019 with minimal loss of life, and they don't routinely murder or assault innocent JC citizens.

They're better than average.

Low bar? Sure. I wish every police department checked the boxes of "protect the citizenry from a mass murder attack" and "don't actually mass murder the citizenry yourself," but the question was about the average, not the ideal.
