Providence RI to South Station Boston is 1 hr 15 minutes or so. There is ZERO chance of making that drive in less than that during rush hours. Plus when on the commuter rail you can do other things besides driving such as reading a book, getting another hour sleep, needlepoint, play games on your phone, watch a movie, practice the bagpipes (ok don't do that one), etc.
