It’s actually “I diffuse light”, which can definitely be understood in two completely opposite ways.

It’s alluding to New Bedford’s history as the whaling capital of the world in the early-to-mid-19th century. Whale oil was primarily used to fuel lamps before the discovery of kerosene*.
