So - will the people being sent there have any choice of whether or not to go?

They can probably choose to fend for themselves. It's not a detention center.

Or we could let them stay at your place.

Why wouldn't they love it? Most people in these parts are happy to see families and children stay warm in the winter.

I love how people think there’s a big fuckin’ welcome to Disneyland sign at the border. You know how many people die and are sent back each year? Do you want a country people want to come to, or do you just want to destroy every other country and then have a shocked pikachu face when people try to escape oppression and miserable lives for something better?

It's going to be run by the Massachusetts emergency management agency, so just pay your taxes I guess.

Usually homeless families go to the DTA office when they become homeless and are assigned to a family shelter or if no family shelter placement is available will often put them up in a motel room. They generally do not get a choice for their placement. As a former advocate for homeless families I can tell you that some families were placed in shelters in places such as Marshfield but their children would commute back to Boston for school (as they lived in Boston when they became homeless and intended to get housing in Boston and under federal law they have the right to continue to go to school at their last permanent residence.) Of course the host city didn't like this as the host city had to pay for the transportation to the school they went to, and the school they went to had to pay for the transportation back to the shelter they lived in. (The homeless family did have the option to send their child to the school the shelter was in, but often chose not to exercise that option.)

I’m going to ignore your assumption that undocumented people are inherently bad (which is, despite however you might justify it, racist), and question your assumption that all of the people using this shelter will all be undocumented. There are plenty of unhoused individuals and families who have spent their whole lives in the commonwealth.

Aw man my nice quiet rest spot before work. Now the parking lot will be a mess. It'll be like when the annoying ass soccer and lacrosse kids are in town. Of course I'm kidding about the shelter, that's a great use of that space. Now only if they actually did something with the thousands and thousands of sqft of space just rotting away. I'm not kidding about the soccer and lacrosse crowds, almost all of those kids and families are beyond annoying.

Funny you should say that. I have sponsored 2 immigrants that have just received their citizenship in the last year and am currently sponsoring another, we are expect permanent visa approval any day now.

Yeah, I don’t understand how a 4 month stay at a shelter is going to get unhoused families back in their feet. There needs to be more long term solutions with affordable housing (and also raising the minimum wage but at least MA is decent about this.) The increase in homelessness is nationwide, there’s clearly a large problem here that a short term shelter can’t address.

MEMA has very little money. And people can donate to the state with a specific stated purpose.
Here is MEMA’s website with contact info.
Just remember that they won’t be fully staffed and taking these kinds of calls or emails until Monday, but you can absolutely contact them and ask how you can donate.

yea well its more complicated now then just having X spot to put Y people
things like attaching credit scores to rent kinda put a damper on things also
I know more people that are struggling with housing from NOT paying their bills and spending on X,Y,Z
cooperating with others for a common goal of sustainable suitable safe housing should be everyone's top priority
many need help achieving that goal
others just need to stop being dinks, slobs, addicts, or other unattractive traits that prevent them from obtaining long term stability

"Temporary" intake shelter they said.
Up to 60 families (125 people maxium) they said.
Stays at the center will be short they said.
Expected to be open for four months they said.
I suppose they expect it to be open for 4 months because they'll feel more comfortable making people homeless when it's not so cold outside.
