Feel like the new format of the playoffs starting before Thanksgiving have made the Thanksgiving day games a lot less meaningful. Especially when teams were battling it out for spots in the playoffs. Now teams in the playoffs don’t care as much about the game and while bragging rights are good it’s not the same.

Do people care about high school football after they leave high school?

I don’t remember it being anything other than a non divisional game growing up (30 years ago). Playoffs had already started and seasons were basically finished by Thanksgiving.

Fall sports need to be done by Sunday after thanksgiving. Winter sports start the Monday after Thanksgiving. This has been the case for a long time. So I don’t know what you mean by these games used to mean something. They have always been the last games of the season.

Tell that to the thousands of ppl who show up for some of the most storied rivalry games in football history in Wellesley needham and Latin English. Not sure why ppl get all worked up about something that means a lot to the players and ppl who work all summer and fall to play these games

No they weren’t, The Thanksgiving Day games were always the last game of the season. The MIAA never had playoffs till recently. There were sectional super bowls who would then play in the State super bowls the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Winter Sports have always started the Monday after Thanksgiving, I’ve been out of High School for 32 years now and that’s how it was then and how it is now.

At least in the the late 2000s it was definitely rivalry game as last game of regular season. Then conference champions made some sort of playoffs of group of 4 that was over in the first weekend in December.

In the Tri-Valley League, the last football games of the season are almost always on Thanksgiving. They are played between rival towns, such as Medway vs Millis, Bellingham vs Norton, or Hopkinton vs Ashland
