Why are there no Hannafords or Market Baskets in Western Mass? They are in VT, NH ,ME and Eastern Mass but seem to stop at the Worcester County border in Mass. We have Big Y , S&S , Price Rite or ALDIs to choose from. With most only having a Big Y or S&S to pick from with the occasional Super Walmart to choose from. Has always seemed odd that they have decided to not move into Western Mass, at the least into the Springfield area.

Population density probably? Aldi serves a niche population but big y and stop & shop are well established in the area. Market Basket probably doesn't think the numbers are there to add additional groceries. And we're pretty sparse out here especially thru franklin county and the berkshires.

I think this is the answer right here - Stop and Shop and Big Y are already well established for the populace out west.

Hannafords is all over Maine and Vermont, don’t think population density is the issue. Market Basket is kind of like a price rite type store, but I still think they’d do well in Hampden and Hampshire Counties. And possibly in the Greenfield area. There might even be a MB in Orange if my memory serves me correctly.

What's near the Hannafords in Maine? Where my grandparents live there's a Hannafords but there is nothing else.

Usually, whoever is there first for rural areas stays. It's not worth the risk for other companies to try and set up shop.

There's a Market Basket in Athol. And in those places where MB is all over, are there also Big Y and Stop & Shop? Population density is directly related to potential demand. Stop & Shop and Big Y have the market eaten up in western MA. Another grocery store won't make any money.

But I prefer more variety when I’m up here. During the winter I have Food Lion, Kroger, Harris Teeter, Piggly Wiggly( never will go here) Wegmans , Sams Club , ALDIs and a few more. I guess a guy can dream about grocery stores.

And the population density (traffic, congestion, crime) where you are in winter compared to population density in this town in western MA. How does that compare?

Western Mass has a much higher population density, much bigger urban core, just bigger in every aspect. Eastern NC is where I live in the winter.

Hannaford and S&S are owned by the same parent company and have very similar inventories/prices.

A big factor is that the Big Y is a western Mass staple and the Big Y is so popular here in western Mass the other things are not as popular. The Big Y gets it's name from the intersection called also the Y in Chicopee Willimansett where rt 116 and 141 split where the first store was.

There is a Market Basket in Athol I believe. I never go there because it's too far from Springfield. I hope every day that they open one here, I love MB so much. I would never go anywhere else.

If you're looking for something interesting in the Springfield area I highly recommend Fresh Acres in East Longmeadow

Been to Fresh Acres a lot. Would love a MB In the area too. A Hannafords would be great as well. I have a feeling Big Y plays a role in this somewhat.

MB does not have a warehouse near Western MA so that would have to be step 1. I would love them to come out this way. They would clean house.

If there was a Market Basket in Holyoke or Hadley it would generate more revenue than any other store. Wake up Market Basket
