I'm looking for a place to go skating casually for a few hours this weekend. I moved here from NY in 2020, and I'm shocked at how clogged up all the local ice rink schedules are with youth hockey and adult hockey leagues. In NY pretty much every county has at least one rink that is always public during prime times, with reservation options only during off hours like the middle of weekdays, late nights, and early mornings. I'm not usually one to get upset about "my taxpayer dollars," but most of these ice rinks are part of public parks, so it really gets under my skin that they're only actually available to the public for an hour or two per day, and those times aren't even the same from week to week.

I know the Boston Frog Pond is public, so that's my plan B, but I'm ideally hoping to find someplace in the suburbs north of Boston.

Google MDC rinks they will show you rinks located in the Boston and surrounding area. I see there is a rink in Peabody called James McVann-Louis O’keefe on Lowell street. You should be able to find one close. Open skating is not always available due to hockey and figure skating but I believe weekends would be available at specific times.

Edit also google DCR ice rinks

Boston Common has a public skating pond. There are bathrooms and a little concession stand too.

Burbank Arena in Reading has a Sunday afternoon public skate if weekdays don't work for you.

Castine Field near RMHS gets flooded for skating and doesn't have any time restrictions, but it doesn't have a chilling system so needs to freeze over naturally.

Just Google rinks in your area and look at their public skating schedule. There's a ton of ice rinks and basically all of them have public skating time.
