I think he’s one of the best when it comes to conveying emotion and delivering lines, but he’s always Leo. (See also Tom Hanks, Amy Adams, or Denzel Washington.)

I rate actors that disappear into a role and convey that level of emotion higher: Christian Bale, Daniel Day Lewis, Olivia Coleman, Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman, etc.

Hit the nail on head, he's always Leo and listen nothing wrong with that he always delivers. There's no transformation like Day Lewis or prime De Niro, Oldman or Bale or even Hardy. That's why I don't have him as top tier like some do. When I see someone like Joaquin Phoenix act on screen, it's mind blowing and exciting watching him. With Leo, I always come out and feel a great performance but I've seen better this year.

Amy Adam’s just hit me and you are right. The thing is she so fucking good at being Amy Adam’s that it flys under the radar.

It also hit me how much fucking range bale has. He’s never the same in anything he does

Leo becomes Calvin Candie in Django Unchained, he's totally different from any other role, same goes with his role as Danny Archer in Blood Diamond or his role in Gilbert Grape.

Tom Hanks role as Forrest Gump or his role as Cap. Miller in Saving Private Ryan are completely different too.

It seems to me like you rate someone higher just because they put on a bunch of make-up or put on a different voice. I think it's more impressive when an actor can just be believable and give a genuine performance.

None of the roles I was thinking of hinge on the makeup they wear.

Oldman as Commissioner Gordon is completely different than Oldman as Stansfield in Léon or Oldman as Smiley in TTSS.

Bale isn’t wearing any prosthetics in Newsies or American Psycho but the two characters couldn’t be further apart.

Olivia Coleman in That Mitchell and Webb Look might as well be a different actress from the one who appeared in Broadchurch or The Crown.

I still disagree about your point that Hanks, Dicaprio Washington, Adams etc play all their roles the same way though.
