Did you get any idea of what kinds of horror movies you both like? If you can decide on a sub-genre (slasher, supernatural, monster, etc.), you could look into the best of the best and work from there.

The thing (1982 version) Deliverance (1972) Old Boy (2003 Korea) Shaun of the dead for a horribly funny film Three Takahashi Miike films: the audition, Ichi the killer and The Happiness of the Katakuris gore, cringe, and humour.
