Netflix! Greenlight season 2 of Age of Resistance you cowards!

Every time I see a news story about The Dark Crystal, I get pissed off at Netflix all over again. The cancellation of Age of Resistance is probably the biggest Netflix disappointment I've had. People joke about Netflix cancelling shows after three seasons, but we didn't even get a second season.

brb1006 t1_iyf1c2d wrote

Heck, they even got some of the Game of Thrones actors and actresses to voice some of the new Gelflings. I remember the cancellation was announced not long after Age of Resistance won an Emmy for "Outstanding Children's Program".

Kim-Jong_Bundy t1_iyf6sbp wrote

The voice cast altogether was pretty fucking insane.

Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor Joy, Simon Pegg, Keegan Michael Key, Benedict Wong, Awkwafina, Jason Isaacs, Mark Hamill, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Mark Strong, Helena Bonham Carter, Sigourney Weaver, Lena Headey, Eddie Izzard, Alicia Vikander.

Even if just for voice roles, I can already see how that show might've been over budget

maybe… i bet a lot of a-listers might take less to be a part of it though… the Dark Crystal is so EPIC i bet many jumped on the opportunity…

I loved "The Dark Crystal" even though parts of it scared the crap out of me when I saw it in a theater when it first came out. Watching "Age of Resistance" captured so much of that same magic. I swear it was like the spirit of Jim Henson himself was present when they did the puppet-show-within-a-puppet-show to explain the UrSkeks and how they split themselves into the Skeksis and the urRu mystics.

geekmansworld t1_iyfbpks wrote

Or let them continue at Disney or Amazon. Netflix used to be the one to save shows from being consigned to the dumpster, not the other way around!

Faithless195 t1_iyetgdy wrote

There's a looot of shows you can say that about with Netflix. They've canned a lot of legit great shows and kept some utter trash going for absolute years.

There’s supposed to be a second season?

Stormygeddon t1_iyeicst wrote

Didn't most of the props burn down making it unfeasible?

Stjornur t1_iyekf9f wrote

Never heard of that, I just heard the budget to make a production like Age of Resistance and the views it was drawing in was so disproportional that it was unjustifiable to greenlight a season 2 and spend all that money for maybe a fraction of the views of many much, much cheaper productions. Makes sense, but sad Age of Resistance didn't catch more attention, it certainly deserved it.

tdasnowman t1_iyev6ga wrote

Thats just the internet being salty. Last official word from the Henson company is they are ready anytime someone wants to fund it.

23

brb1006 t1_iyek06a wrote

If true, what a waste of money. All the sets and puppets were build from the ground up just for the show and future episodes. :(

11

kicknomoreforever t1_iyeu3bz wrote

Right. While I’m sure it’s not cheap, a lot of the money is already spent building all those sets and props. I’ve got to imagine Season 2 would be cheaper. But in this era it seems an expensive show kind of needs to hit right away or it stands little chance of continuing.

This movie is really, really good. The aesthetics alone are amazing and definitely make me miss practical special effects, especially by the magicians at Henson's Creature Shop. The show actually did a really good job at honoring that as well. I did not expect such a deeply committed labor of love from it. It was almost too in depth.. (and unfortunately too many gelfling characters that looked similar). Back to the film though, really unforgettable music and atmosphere, creature and set designs. You don't forget the look of the Skeksis, or the look of a puppet losing it's essence to the crystal, or our introduction to the living forrests, or Aughra and her amazing planetary contraption! Really underrated film imo

Kids won’t watch it with me because it’s “too creepy” :(

Weirdly enough, I'm more than okay with re-releases of classics into the theatres and wish they'd do more of it.

If we got a screening on FILM, I would go...but this is Fathom Events, I have been to a couple of their screenings, they are digital and use sub-par projectors. I would rather just watch at home.

If I were going by myself, I'd possibly rethink it now that I know this. But the kiddo wants to go, and I've never seen it on a big screen so it'll still be a fun night out.
