that one blew the movie lid off for me when I was around 6. It had it all, action scenes, depressing scenes, scary scenes, catharsis, adventure, etc. Shame the sequels never captured the magic, or the quality, of the original.
It is THE children movie that try to remember you to continue to fantasize and use your imagination. It is so well done. A masterpiece IMO.
US. I’m personally not very prudish or into censoring, just would want it to be age appropriate (themes a kid can relate to) and would preview a sad death ahead of time to give it context probably.
Always a good idea. u/riegspsych325 below says it right. It has it all.
Most 80’s kids consider that movie traumatizing. I liked it though.
Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle
If you don’t mind a little trauma: the land before time. It’s a classic.
Hook
Honey I shrunk the kids
Homeward bound
charlotte’s web
And if you can find it, the 9 lives of Garfield. It’s a little known gem from the 80s. It’s hilarious.
Garfield’s 9 Lives - Diana still wrecks me.
Time Bandits(Terry Gilliam is such a fucking troll lol)
Dragonheart(bit outdated)
I loved dragonheart
The Princess Bride - 9 or 10
In my day, ‘movie magic’ was called ‘book magic’
I must have watched Flight of the Navigator 300 times. Fred Savage is truly , as family guy says, America's best actor
Fred Savage? He’s not in it.
You're right, but it is in my memory, lol
That guy does look like him though. But as a kid I was blown away that Pee Wee Herman was the ships voice. Kinda suspected it when it was talking normal in the beginning but giddy afterwards.
Holy crap you just awakened a hidden memory. I googled the movie and just realized I saw it a bunch as a kid and have vivid memories of scenes, but never knew what they were from until now!!

Goonies, Never Ending Story, Top Gun, Willow and ET!!!
I came looking for Goonies but goodies is close enough.
Lol yeah autocorrect got me.
The Pagemaster
The cat from outer space, any age
The Secret Of Nimh 6-7
Watership Down 9-10
Fantastic Planet
The Illusionist 2010
Over the garden wall
Mary and max
The tale of princess Kaguya
The point
Song of the sea
Free to be…you and me
And when you want to talk about war,
Grave of the fireflies - 10
Personally my favorites movies growing up (excluding disney's / pixar's animation) :
I don't know if you consider them Child Appropriate but I find them all to be fun and full of adventures when I was a child (<10 years old). I find treasure hunting movies, etc is always fun to watch
and I need to mention Kung-Fu Panda, the best animation movie imo
100% agree with Never-ending Story, and adding Willow
Explorers (1985) fun for the whole family.
Heavyweights
ET
Any Don Bluth movie. Specifically An American Tail 1 and 2.
The Dark Crystal. Fell in love with the movie when it came out back in the day and it's still a favorite. The recent Netflix show was also great and I'm still pissed they passed on a second season. I would have been 10 when I first saw it - so it should be fine. Might depend on the kid, if they need bright colors and non-stop action - Dark Crystal is a bit slower but boy does it pay off.
The movie came out the year I was born but I remember it always being on even if I couldn't tell you a single thing about the plot, lol. I just recently watched it for the first time since I was a kid and loved it. Even dressed as Kira and did a Dark Crystal theme for my trunk or treat (I was a surprising hit, lol). I watched it because a friend's little boy just got into it so it's been fun having something in common with him. Good memories.
Land Before Time. Absolutely LOVE THIS MOVIE STILL. Sad, yes but also just a very good movie. Also Secret of NIMH.
"Bryan's Song". The movie about Bryan Picallo and Gayle Sayers friendship circa 1971. It's a movie about hope and inspiration despite the looming death of one of the characters played by James Caan. Billy Dee Williams has a great performance.
Bugsy Malone
Almost anything I watched felt magical but as an adult the same ones are huge disappointments.
Matilda, Harry Potter, ET, Jurassic Park
Polar express
Harry Potter
Oliver and company
The mummy
Jumanji(original)
I dunno. 5 years old might be too young for The Mummy. There are some semi graphic scenes that might scare them.
You’re right
The Little Princess
Love Bug
Snowball Express
The Apple Dumpling Gang
The Ugly Dachshund
The Million Dollar Duck
That Darn Cat
Willy Wonka
Wizard of Oz
Hard to get away from Disney
American tale was always my favorite. The secret garden, a little princess, Harriet the spy, Paulie, Beethoven, Indian in the cupboard, free Willy.
I let my kids watch the never ending story and they did not share my love for it. That movie will always be a top for me. I’ve seen it a million times and love it. As a mom though there is a death scene and a scary black wolf that attacks.
The Rocketeer.

Superman (1978)
Superman II (1980)
The Last Unicorn. Maybe not very well known but I watched it on repeat as a kid and still think about it to this day.
A Little Princess. Such a magical movie. directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Been having almost weekly movie nights with my niece and nephew these past few months. The movies that my niece really enjoyed was the Harry Potter series.
Also recently, we watched Matilda the Musical and they thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a fan of the stage musical and I am so glad I watched with them because it was just a fun experience overall.
Akeelah and the Bee
Matilda
School of Rock
So many nostalgic movies! ah, my childhood! I'm throwing 'Hook' into the ring. So much fun and whimsy. Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams in these roles are iconic.
I love both the live action scooby do movies! They were my favorite as a kid and still are :)

Never Ending Story. Falcor flying, the rock biter and the princess were magical and grabbed me.
Edit: Oh wait. Where are you? Spoiler: (I don’t know how to do that black bar spoiler thing)Would you be offended by statues with boobs? Or a character dying in a very heartbreaking way?
