This and Fantastic Planet are two of my favorite European animated films. Laloux did some really interesting stuff.

trivia: Penn and Teller are listed in the credits as having voiced some of the mutants. It's been years and even when I did listen for it (or him, as it's Penn's voice that is so recognizable), I couldn't find out which ones they voiced. Great film though.

I found this movie on a unlabeled vhs one day after HS when I was super high. It was this and Naussica and the valley of the wind. Both blew my mind. It was my first experience with animation that wasn't necessarily for kids. This movie has a really special place in my heart/memory!
