This is needed. The Upper Valley is a child care bubble. There are only a few viable childcare providers…some of which have management issues and a rotating door of staff (despite receiving ample COVID relief money). I paid more than $30K for child care last year, and I was probably in the middle of the pack because my kids are slightly older. I know one family with an infant and a toddler that is paying more than $3,500 per month.

Pretty sure we use the same daycare. If so, we can probably agree the owner (who made herself the director without any childcare or management assistance) has really tried our patience. I don’t understand why it can be so difficult.

Yup, that’s the one. Fortunately, we were able to escape to greener pastures a few months ago. The constant drama was just too much…not good for the staff, the kids, or the families.

My son went to daycare for like 3 weeks in his life because it cost as much as his dad was making at work. It sucked. We were always poor. I worked at a daycare, and even though I liked it, I made $10/hr. I was also working at the NH State Liquor stores making $13, so I left the daycare. That place is completely closed now.

Here's a bit more on the project details so far: City Partnering in Design and Operation of Childcare Facility

This sounds like a big win for the city. It is certainly something that is needed and providing competitive child care rates may force the private centers in the area to lower theirs.

I'd be curious about two things:

How will they meet their stated goal of at least 51% of the children coming from low to moderate income? IMO a copy of a 1040 would be decent proof, but is the city willing to go that far.

Also, how will this be funded?

Full disclosure I am a member of the Placework design team. It's very early in the pre-design phase of the project so a lot of questions are still being answered and a lot more need to be asked. But I've never seen the level of commitment from a municipality on a similar project like I've seen so far here. I can't speak to funding, that would have to go through the city manager.
