Here's what we paid in CT:

Description CT
Registration Fee $120
Plate Fee $5
Title Fee $25
Admin Fee $10
Clean Air Act Fee $15
Passport to the Parks Fee $15
Greenhouse Gas Fee if vehicle as certificate of origin $15
Emissions Test $20
Above total takes place every 2 years $225
Total (per year) $112
Property Tax (annual basis) $398
Total Annual Cost $510

Here's what we'll be paying in NH, same vehicle:

Description NH
Registration Fee $44
State Park Plate Fee $85
Title Fee $25
Permit Fee $39
Agent $3
Clerk $2
Local Title $2
Transportation $5
NH Inspection $30
Total Annual Cost $235

We are saving $275 per vehicle, per year by living in NH. We have 2 vehicles 6 and 11 years old. This comes out to around $550 saved. Our insurance is also dropping from $1100 to $450 per year for 2 drivers, 2 vehicles. So that is another $650 in savings. Altogether we're saving $1200 per year or $100/month. That is a lot of $ to be saving for simply owning a car in another state.

Now do that for income tax. And property tax.

Make sure your uninsured and underinsured auto coverage is good. Many drivers do not carry insurance because it is not required. The state of NH does nothing when you are hit by an uninsured driver, you will be on your own.

Agreed.

The income tax thing is a no brainer, but I've never seen a property tax comparison performed. I imagine you'd have to find two towns with a similar tax base and compare mil rates to make it an apples to apples.

When we left CT in 93, for NH, to me, I guessed a $10k in my pocket benefit.

This is interesting. Registering my truck in NH cost be about double what I was paying in MA.

Cost me $199.20 in NH MA was about $115($95 excise tax + $20reg) These are both for renewals.

Edit: forgot I had a moose plate. Let's call it $170 vs $115

tbh when people say NH property taxes are really high, I'm not sure I buy that because coming from CT I have yet to see property taxes in comparable towns in NH that have property tax bills higher than CT.

Thank you for your contribution - but it seems that this skews any cost of ownership comparison. (Isn't the CT $15 fee mandatory?)

Car/personal property taxes is part of your registration fee. A new car is taxed at $18 per thousand of sticker price. The rate goes down $3 each year, but not lower than $3.
