Doc Brown would lose his mind if he heard this. 11 gigawatts powering millions of homes by 2040

good, any energy that is greener and us-based is a positive at this point

Sustainable energy from aesthetically pleasing power generators bringing permanent well paying jobs. Clearly a threat to the quality of life of Ocean City residents. /s

I know. And I think they are being stupid. Because if the choice is between this and this it seems like an easy choice to me.

By the way. Both those images are of real, existing power generators here in NJ. So this is literally the choice.

I never understood why people think wind turbines ruin their view, I think they look great. Most likely just making up excuses to oppose renewable energy, the same way right wingers say shit like "but what about the birds killed by wind energy?" or "but there's so much mercury in CFL bulbs!"

I am all for greener energy but wind power really kills thousands of birds. Wish we would embrace nuclear more

How about when oil starts leaking out of them or they start burning or the upkeep costs more than what they produce. How environmentally safe is that? Do your research before you start trashing people!

I seem to recall driving past a coal power plant on my way in to Ocean City for my entire life. They can take it easy. Wind turbines are definitely an upgrade over that gigantic cooling tower.

Every source of energy and every location has some negative. Risks vs costs vs benefits, a conundrum as old as the earth itself. Those risks and costs are always "minimal" unless you are directly affected by them. For example people are killed every day by hitting or damaged utility poles. Did we totally eliminate them to do away with that risk of one falling over while you're at a stoplight and getting you. Sometimes in some places we do by moving utilities underground. Of course then other risks from that. The cost of moving them underground are substantially more than leaving them on poles. Some places have decided those costs are worth the benefits, other places haven't. Same applies to generation. Unfortunately, the choice has to be made between different costs and different risks and different benefits. We are world dependent on cheap energy. There's never an easy answer.

I'm sure we can come up with some tech to keep the birds away. Sounds like a challenge for some NJ high schools or colleges to me. Maybe State funded.

Edit: Here's a freebie to get everyone rolling because I love CS and animals. A fleet of AI drones that intercept incoming flocks and play an incredibly irritating sound when in the vicinity of the birds until their vector is acceptable. There. Enjoy. They could station and charge right on top of the turbines.

I work in Atlantic City near the turbines there. I think they look good and they do not bother the view at all. If anything the sewerage plant they are located at looks better because of the turbines.

It's just an insane, moronic argument because there is NO good reason to not go renewable in many cases, but the right had made it a political thing, so they have to latch onto something to explain why they're opposed to it

They're still planning on putting these like 15 miles out, right?

People seem to be under the impression that you'll be staring up at them from the edge of the waters. I don't think there's an appreciation for how far 15 miles is.

Long Beach Island is 18ish miles long. From the top of the waterslides in Beach Haven, you can't see the lighthouse in Barnegat Light. Windmills would be the same.

Exactly. Lewes has a turbine on the beach that Uof Delaware owns. It's about the same distance to Cape May. I know exactly where it is and 90% of the time it is visible it takes a me a minute to find it on the horizon and you can barely see it. More often than not it is too hazy to see.

For the power you need to supply nj you would need thousands of them. Don't forget murphy will try to pass it because he put alot of money into it. What will happen to ocean life and the upkeep and where do you put the broken plastic which won't degrade so tell me again how environmentally safe it is!

If I remember correctly, current peak power demand in the state is about 13 gigawatts so 11 would be stellar.

I wonder what the estimated average production is?

I did see some sad win turbines in the Catskills on Thursday, no wind no money.

Which part is uneducated? Windmills to kill thousands of birds a year. And i said i wish we moved towards nuclear, which is the cleanest source of energy. What part is propoganda?
