I just signed up for EZ Pass online because I am taking a road trip to Washington next week.

I have a few questions :

  1. Do I need to do anything else to receive the tag besides set up and account and pre pay for tolls?
  2. When should I receive my tag by? Will it automatically come in the mail?
  3. If it’s not arrived in the mail in time for my road trip, when going through the tolls, will my account be charged? Or should I pay cash?

Thanks so much!

You just setup your account and load some money on it.

You don’t actually need the tag in your car if it doesn’t come in time. The ez pass is registered to your license plate so if you go through a toll booth it will know you have ez pass. It will say “till unpaid” at the booth but it will just deduct from your ex pass.

I bought an EZ Pass "go pack" at a rest stop 7-11 on the PA Turnpike last year. It cost $45 but also had a credit of $35 or so attached to it. Registered it that night, couldn't use it without getting docked for violations until 48 hours later.

I did not know about the "you don't need the tag in your car" part...

Make sure you have your vehicle and plate listed on your account. Also have a credit card on the account to replenish the funds.

Is EZ Pass nationwide now? I recall running into other toll companies traveling out of the NE few years back.

Some states still use their own names for them (iPass in IL is the first one that comes to mind), but most toll facilities on the east coast and midwest are compatible with EZPass now.

TX, OK, KS, CA, CO, and that one little shit bridge in Nassau County are some notable places with tolls that don't take it.

EZ Pass map from Wikipedia.

Edit - The Margate bridge by Atlantic City doesn't take EZPass either apparently. I thought I saw an article a few years ago they were going to start taking it. Guess not.
