For the sake of argument let's say people can work longer because they live longer. That, however, does not diminish the years those people have contributed to society by their efforts and endeavors. By all accounts today's workforce is more productive than in the past. Using that as a metric the retirement age should be reduced.

But all of that is aside from the real intent of those who wish to raise the retirement age. The fund needs to be increased. And the wealthy want the non wealthy to pay for it.

This is the whole problem with “reforms”. They’re not reforms so much as they’re just cuts. Reform can make sense if done fairly. Cuts are abhorrent and should be blocked if at all possible.

Sadly, productivity gains can't offset the simple fact that there are fewer and fewer workers paying into the system to support each retiree.

I don't know about France but in the US the limit for withholding will be raised to $160,200 this year. That means a person claiming a yearly income of $2,000,000 will contribute the same as a person claiming $160 grand.

The retirment system is not failing in France though, contrary to what the gvt wants people to think. But if money is missing, maybe they can start by not giving huge subventions to companies that are not struggling financially (quite the opposite actually). Billions are spent every year to help private companies. But obviously Macron and his cronies are more willing to crush the middle class than force the rich to contribute.

This is why I will never trust the government for my retirement. Just give me the money instead and I will toss it into an ETF.
