Israel defence minister said on Saturday that “we must stop the legislative process”

“The growing social rift has made its way into the army and security agencies. It is a clear, immediate and tangible threat to Israel’s security,” said Galant, who is a member of Netanyahu’s own right-wing Likud party.

Edit: he was just fired.

Edit2: his sacking caused mass protests and riots around the country.

It's a test of wills now. Will Netanyahu back down on his attempt to become a dictator? Or will the people's voice actually make a difference?

This is crazy the more I think of it. I have no understanding of Israel law but it seems there’s some loophole that was never noticed before? That can allow this to happen under normal legal circumstances? Like he doesn’t have to drive tanks through the cities and whatnot sort of thing?

I wonder what loopholes other countries have and if this will be tried elsewhere

It's not that crazy really. Eroding democratic defense mechanisms over time is classic autocrat methodology.

Similar steps were taken by Putin, Orban, Erdogan, Maduro or Trump. Netanyahu has been in power for a long time, this is just another step in a process years in the making.

Who’s in the government? I’m sure they’re not all evil. Yet if you don’t speak or protest against injustice, at least speak out if you scared . Not enough are speaking out unfortunately. If the victims of the holocaust saw what their descendants are doing, would they be proud ?

FYI miss me with my anti semitic mess, I have Ethiopian blood in me , last I checked we are just as Semitic

Are you not seeing the protests going on? The country highways, roads, and public spaces are being taken over by people. The people do not want what is going on. It’s a small portion of the country that does and unfortunately there are flaws with Israel’s government. Like many others, it is far from perfect.

Technically it's not a loophole, because the supreme court can legally rule out such legislation (that contradicts existing laws, for example). However, current minister of justice declared the goverment will not "accept" that, and will treat it as a coup detat (which is what said goverment is being accused of; very common rhetoric by our right wing politicians). That's where the tanks, or the threat of, come in. In addition to the accumulating erosion of judiciary independence in the past decade, we don't have much assurance from that direction.

They aren’t a perfect nation but I challenge you to find me nation without flaws. And as much as everyone likes to pile on Israel, they do plenty of good. And as much as people don’t want to admit it, much of the nations today were created by conquering other lands. Israel is one of the few examples who actually gave back land after defeating other nations in an effort to gain peace.

You say you’re Ethiopian or of Ethiopian decent. It’s like pot calling kettle black in regard to the Tigray massacre and apartheid. But whatever, use this post about government corruption to bring up an unrelated topic I guess cause Arabs.

I think he gets through this and immediately starts an issue with Iran, Gaza, etc. Create a crisis that the country has to unite around.

Way things have been going lately I wouldn’t even be surprised if he went after the Dome to cause enough chaos to cover his crimes.
