I had no idea Vietnam was like this.

Yea, you’re gonna want to look into the fall of Saigon. It isn’t like the US left once the side they were backing won. Nope, it was the opposite of that. It was a bit like what went down in Afghanistan, in fact.

Never learned that in school!

After the fall, the sanctions came in and the country fell into a recession. There was no help from the outside and people started to leave. I'm one of those people that came from Vietnam during that time.

You can still learn after your school days.

In fact, most of what you learn should come after you leave school.

Are people not aware the Communists won the war and are still in power?
Granted it is not a hostile foreign power by any means but it's still run by the same authoritarian system and has not reformed into a democracy like the "Asian Tiger" countries have for the most part.

Vietnam isn't an asian tiger though?
And pretty much all the asian tigers are dysfunctional in their own way (except maybe taiwan)

That comment is saying Vietnam is unlike the Asian tigers.

Most countries are like this. America was a revolution in human rights (sorry, a point of clarification, white male human rights, especially if they owned land).
That spread around a little last century, but by and large, the Roman era laws and ancient east laws are the way of the world.

How thin skinned is a government that it lays out 8 years because someone had an opinion? Communisim is a nasty vile system.

Vietnam strong enough to take on the United States and when also so afraid they can't handle criticism.

I get the sense that sometimes people on Reddit forget that Vietnam is also an authoritarian country. Perhaps it's forgotten because of sympathies for the country's cause in the Vietnam War, or perhaps it's because Vietnam is seen as antagonistic to the PRC.
