The NHL has been making a top down effort (in a bland corporate sort of way) but these guys are coming up in a system full of the worst sort of sports bro culture. Especially in Canada where they're equivalent to high level highschool/college football players in the US in terms of social privilege and protection.
It's been interesting to watch this subculture acknowledging its issues and trying to change, though. Not going great at this stage but it is going.
