Exactly. Religion does not deliver, and so it looks for something that can.
And then, like always, religion eats it.

I thought these churches were mostly constructed to be exempt from the drug laws and that the founders, members and visitors were mostly in it for the drugs, which in turn can give you a spiritual experience, that can be celebrated, and be the foundation for some community. They have to keep up the appearances of being a church without laughing too much. But I could be wrong.

"pushing the boundaries of religion" by participating in spiritual psychedelic ceremonies like humans have done since ancient times?
Our modern clean-and-sober ethic is the historical aberration. This is just people trying to cram an intrinsic human behavior into a social construct built against it.

Religion pushes the boundaries of reality...
Chard069 t1_j70ldyo wrote
That depends on your goal. Spiritual truth? Good luck. Community gatherings? Pass the wine and lemonade. Excuse for discrimination? Oh, that's traditional. Sales opportunities? None better!

Oh, you misunderstand. I meant it more like Are you for real? Because I smell bullshit.

Am I real? My replaced joints (knees mostly) demand attention, so I guess at least those bits of me include observable reality. I try not to fake my thoughts, too. YMMV.

I'd bet that most religions sprang from consumption of psychedelics. Mushrooms are everywhere and ergot (lsd) is too
Careless_Relief_1378 t1_j70bpc8 wrote
No LSD was an invented chemical compound. It isn’t anywhere naturally. There are however other psychedelics found in nature.
Notsurehowthisgoes51 t1_j73fuhe wrote
Technically yes, but ergot has 2 precursers from which LSD can be derived.

LSA is found naturally in Morning glory and Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seeds, and it's damn close.
Morning glorys are also pretty common, especially nowadays when the seeds are sold in every department store.

With extended religious freedom, a church dedicated to a 'saintly' junky (like certain jazz musicians) should legally administer heroin as a sacrament, right? For churches of some rockstars, the sacred powder would be cocaine. St Leary's followers should be dosed with LSD. Hey, religious freedom is hot!

Hey, with a nation that (officially) hate drugs and love religion, this seems like a natural path.
Chard069 t1_j735w6x wrote
There exists at least one USA church with peyote as its sacrament. Look to the future! Psychedelic fungi, herbs, and cacti for all! If one or more deities reside within us, feed them well... or else...

See. now this is why we can't have nice things.
You take a potentially wonderful experience that allows your mind to process information from different points of view and potentially lead you to greater insight and distort it into a tool of manipulation by proclaiming an imaginary being is directing things and so you are now a member of the club and the club needs lots of money.
