It's not implausible. The entire South China Sea is basically a fight over what rock formation technically constitutes an "island" so Japan/Korea/Taiwan/China can claim a wider fishing territory. Think the fight for Pluto, if Pluto being a planet meant a country would gain or lose billions of dollars

Korea isn't near the South China sea tho. You're thinking of the Sea of Japan(East Sea)
