Japanese islands. Hide n' Seek champions for the last 100,000 years or so

Countries with oceans around them will defend even small islands to the death. This is because the loss of such an island would reduce the size of their territory. It would be the same in the UK.

I have to imagine any rock sticking out of the water counts as an island.

No need to imagine. And all the volcanic activity in their region constantly creates new islands.

It's not implausible. The entire South China Sea is basically a fight over what rock formation technically constitutes an "island" so Japan/Korea/Taiwan/China can claim a wider fishing territory. Think the fight for Pluto, if Pluto being a planet meant a country would gain or lose billions of dollars

Korea isn't near the South China sea tho. You're thinking of the Sea of Japan(East Sea)

Third article I’ve seen from Fox News here today.

My money is on them doing this to lay claim on the islands and the 12 juicy nautical miles of internationally-defined territorial (or a whopping 200 nautical miles of exclusive economical) water rights around those islands.
Edit:. Nope nvm, it won't increase their territory, it's just for cataloging.

Tomorrow, most of them will be below the surface again.

They say there are actually 100,000 islands. Since we're counting islands with a radius of 100 meters or more this time, there are countless islands with a radius of less than 100 meters.
