I’m an avid Apple maps user which tends to work really well for public transport in the UK, but I’m not sure how it differs oversees. Regardless, I do have it downloaded so I’ll keep that in mind.

Citymapper is a great app that gives you step by step directions of all travel options from point to point in nyc.

Surprised I haven’t heard of this one, I’ll get it downloaded. I’m kinda relying on the hope that my familiarity with the London Underground will help me with navigating NYC’s subway system. It helped a lot in Milan and from what have seen it’s not too far different.

It’s really not that hard to figure out how to get around nyc. You’ll pick it up in a day if you can get around London.

And you didn't put JFK to your hotel in Manhattan into maps and see what it told you?

Airtrain from JFK to Jamaica Train station. Take the Long Island RR there to Manhattan- either Penn Station for West Side or Grand Central for East. It's easy and might even be faster than a car. You can go cheaper if you want to take the subway (A train) from Jamaica, but I always prefer the LIRR as there are way fewer stops.
