It’s said often but New Yorkers are not cold heartless people. It’s just that when you encounter thousands of people on a single commute or walk, it’s difficult or impossible to extend niceties or courtesies to all. So usually you zone out, which is interpreted as coldness or rudeness.

But if someone actually needs help, you’ll often find those around snapping out of it to help them.

I definitely wouldn’t say that, lately it seems like most people pull out their phones and record when bad shits happening, and put it on social media for clout.
