You're brother may have to get to a shelter or something as proof he doesn't live there and just say you let him use your address to fill out paperwork bc he's homeless.

He's not going to do that. We already went through the whole thing with him giving them a different address like his aunts. Or using a Po box or mailing address and I already know how his thinking is I'm not dealing with that interaction. My main goal is just to pay down the arrears and then find a new housing to live in.

I'd bring a copy of your lease to home-base or w e to see how you can add family. You may have to get on ssi to get disability ish waved.... my daughter has a disability and we needed to do that first to get approval from the New York Office of people with Developmental Disabilities to get services for her, like speech therapy, etc. and it's extra proof that they ask... you can quickly get a job after that if you can, if you do plan on trying to work....

And I'm not trying to add him to my lease. I just want them to lower my rent back down and I want to get these rent arrears paid. So I can move out and find somewhere else to go.

I'd try to see if you can appeal their decision regarding your section 8 and pretty much go to homebase. Legal aid can help you with disability. It's worth getting that one letter from the state that recognizes it if you want to get medical care, but you have to want it and go or I doubt the court will care if you show them the stuff unless it's on going.

Oh, and if you apply, they give you a case manager for services you didn't even think you'd need. For example, I didn't know what occupational therapy was, but now I know, and they got my daughter signed up for that. Once you get a single approval from the New York State office, they'll help you with everything, even if you get income later bc they want the family to be as independent as possible. I'm more familiar with the Office of Developmental Disabilities than anything else, but it's good and you'll be work ready.

Can you get information as to why you can't put a family member on a lease? I know my apartment allows for immediate family members to overstay 2 weeks.....

It's not that I can't. It's just he doesn't have a job. Or any source of income. And he doesn't live here.
They're overcharging me with the regular contract rent and had took away my subsidy(for a year) which had my rent at a rate I could afford. Because they assume he lives here. And since then they left it like that. Then because I was out of work I couldn't pay the 1k they kept adding so the arrears added up. I had public assistance paying it down but I still supposedly owe them 14k. And they recently had lowered my rent back to 230$ which my public assistance has been paying for while I've been looking for work.
I live in subsidized housing, section 8.
The contract rent is 2K.
