You have no family or job in nyc? it’s expensive here. Maybe consider moving?

I lived here my whole life. I was born in NYC.

My mom spent her life working two jobs to afford to care for myself and my two older brothers who aren't helpful at the moment. And my dad spent his life working to care for us as best he could.

If I can't afford to live here anymore what makes you think I'd be able to afford to move out of here?

The fact I lived here my whole life and it's gotten to the point I have to move away because it's so pricey kinda says something huh?

Also I have family here, they just choose not to be helpful. I have aunt's and uncles and cousins. And they're dealing with their own lives.

I have friends and my bf who live in NYC as well. They're the only ones who have been helping me.

And I want to move away, when I don't have so much debt, I have rent arrears, student loans, credit debt etc.

Maybe spend some of your weed money on paying back the rent you’re owed? We live in a capitalist society and unfortunately if you don’t work and make money you will be left behind.

This whole situation is absurd. Williamsburg is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the world.

Btw if anyone asks why don't I have family to help. Neither of my older Brothers really have the means to help. One of them works but he only thinks about himself. The other aforementioned above doesn't work he has a mental illness and he mainly collects cans and helps out the people in his old neighborhood.

My mother's family doesn't even talk to me anymore since the funeral and honestly never reached out to help when I first dealt with these issues after I told them the problems.

My dad died when I was younger. So I have no parents to go to for help. I have no grandparents as they also passed when I was young.

The most help I get is from my BF and my friends. So I'm on my own.

I was out of work for a year or two, and I had found a job recently but lost it due to a lot of transitional issues I was having. So I'm currently looking for work again.

Did you go to homebase?

I did look them up a while ago. But I re emailed them so hopefully they'll respond this time around.

You're brother may have to get to a shelter or something as proof he doesn't live there and just say you let him use your address to fill out paperwork bc he's homeless.

edriona18 t1_j6juwoc wrote

He's not going to do that. We already went through the whole thing with him giving them a different address like his aunts. Or using a Po box or mailing address and I already know how his thinking is I'm not dealing with that interaction. My main goal is just to pay down the arrears and then find a new housing to live in.

I'd bring a copy of your lease to home-base or w e to see how you can add family. You may have to get on ssi to get disability ish waved.... my daughter has a disability and we needed to do that first to get approval from the New York Office of people with Developmental Disabilities to get services for her, like speech therapy, etc. and it's extra proof that they ask... you can quickly get a job after that if you can, if you do plan on trying to work....

edriona18 t1_j6jw9de wrote

And I have thought of applying for disability but that's another level of red tape.

And I'm not trying to add him to my lease. I just want them to lower my rent back down and I want to get these rent arrears paid. So I can move out and find somewhere else to go.

I'd try to see if you can appeal their decision regarding your section 8 and pretty much go to homebase. Legal aid can help you with disability. It's worth getting that one letter from the state that recognizes it if you want to get medical care, but you have to want it and go or I doubt the court will care if you show them the stuff unless it's on going.

harlemtechie t1_j6jz9ng wrote

Oh, and if you apply, they give you a case manager for services you didn't even think you'd need. For example, I didn't know what occupational therapy was, but now I know, and they got my daughter signed up for that. Once you get a single approval from the New York State office, they'll help you with everything, even if you get income later bc they want the family to be as independent as possible. I'm more familiar with the Office of Developmental Disabilities than anything else, but it's good and you'll be work ready.

Can you get information as to why you can't put a family member on a lease? I know my apartment allows for immediate family members to overstay 2 weeks.....

edriona18 t1_j6jvt9j wrote

It's not that I can't. It's just he doesn't have a job. Or any source of income. And he doesn't live here.

They're overcharging me with the regular contract rent and had took away my subsidy(for a year) which had my rent at a rate I could afford. Because they assume he lives here. And since then they left it like that. Then because I was out of work I couldn't pay the 1k they kept adding so the arrears added up. I had public assistance paying it down but I still supposedly owe them 14k. And they recently had lowered my rent back to 230$ which my public assistance has been paying for while I've been looking for work.

I live in subsidized housing, section 8.

The contract rent is 2K.

Yeah, I'd get to home-base ASAP...

I'm sorry for your loss.

If they do want to kick you out, and you do want to move out, you can offer them a deal. For example, they can cancel your debt and maybe give you some extra time to get your life together. In exchange, they could avoid a protracted legal battle and the prospect of never getting paid anything anyway.

They don't know if you can or cannot afford an attorney.

I already go to therapy. I have a psychiatrist and I take medication. So I have the proof along those lines plus I've been out of work for a while and have been looking. But yeah I plan to go to them with my folder full of my rent bills, emails of my correspondence with my housing, the back and forth, the self certification letter they made me get notarized, my public assistance info and even my therapist note of why I left work at that time,I have everything I need.

I think you should call the news

How would calling the news help?

ilikecatfish t1_j6jo239 wrote

When the media gets involved, things tend to move/get resolved quicker because these offices don’t want bad rep.

I'm not really the type I guess to call up the news and I honestly wouldn't know where to go for that. I'm just trying to get these arrears down and to get out of this place asap. If the housing has been around for a while and doing this possibly way before me then it's obvious people may have complained but it never got taken seriously?
