No offense, but it's easy to make statements that can't be verified. It's alternate history. I can just as easily say you are wrong and Bernie would have been trashed twice by Trump.
Raecino t1_j8ffifv wrote
Well the polling numbers at the time would’ve proven you wrong. And that’s how I felt at the time and still feel, there’s nothing alternate about my feelings.

Yes but whose populist style did Trump parrot for himself? Bernie. Bernie was a better candidate against Trump when the Dems ran Clinton. He was a better candidate against Trump when the Dems ran Biden. Running Biden again will be disastrous.

If by "it" you mean "not a Trump presidency," then yes, we almost had that. Could have had it if a bunch of butthurt leftists had been more interested in doing what was good for the country and voted, instead of obsessing about posturing and ideological purity. But nope, hating Hillary was more important than hating Trump, and now we have a fascist supermajority on the Supreme Court, taking away more of our rights every year. Great job!
If by "it" you mean "Bernie getting the Democratic nomination," then no, the math was never there. People were kidding themselves.
And I voted for him in both '16 and '20, I just had realistic expectations. And even if by some fluke he had ended up president, he wouldn't have had the ability to usher in a progressive paradise, because as you might have noticed, even moderate policies like Biden's can barely get through Congress. In a country where rural states have massively outsize power in the Senate, you can elect the most far-left president you want, that doesn't get you any closer to Medicare For All or anything else. It sucks but that's the reality we live in.

More democrat primary voters flipped from Clinton to McCain in 2008 than flipped from Bernie to Trump in 2016. That's a fact. The cult is on the right, it was loosely organized and the racism was veiled until Clinton ran one of the shittiest campaigns imaginable and put the rate of destruction of political discourse in the US into warp speed. If there's a problem with voters, it's with the vast swaths of the public that supports progressive ideas but won't vote for them because they're scared that the other 70% of the country that also supports them is too chicken to do likewise.

Nope.
Exit polls say 84% of Hillary supporters voted for Obama
Source: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/04/exit.polls/
The poll people use to say more Hillary voter flipped for McCain was an opinion poll done during the primary. (https://news.gallup.com/poll/105691/mccain-vs-obama-28-clinton-backers-mccain.aspx)
Only 74.3% of Bernie's primary voters voted for Hillary.
Here is a table of the results(https://imgur.io/iiyC4Eo), as prepared by 538. As you can see, at least 24% of Bernie's primary voters voted against Hillary in the general election. And I'm sure you all remember this, but enough of them voted for Jill Stein to throw the election in MI, PA, and WI.
New_Stats t1_j84a5u9 wrote
Clinton and McCain didn't have a rabid following. Trump and Sanders did. You act like I didn't see the crazy populism and the cult of personality with my own eyes.
>If there's a problem with voters
The problem is populism, it's destructive. And this shit right here is exactly why progressives don't do better, the utter contempt for voters you need in order to have your politicians win is always there, always mentioned. It's not just left wing populists it's their elected leaders and campaign staff too. The "I have the only correct politics and how you idiots don't see it is beyond me" is terrifying for non populists because it's the beginning of authoritarianism
soylentcoleslaw t1_j84eit2 wrote
Both sides! Both sides! Fuck off. Yes I do have contempt for you fence sitters, you like to think that you're the reasonable ones when your only goal is to just try not to make things worse than they already are and you wonder why elections are so razor thin between you and right wing fascism.

The vast majority of the left were never going to support Sanders. He did a lot to raise awareness, and still does, but most people don’t want radical change. Maybe because nothing works out like you expect it will. People with great jobs and healthcare plans didn’t want the same healthcare as the poors. That’s the crux of if. They also expect the police to protect their neighborhoods but aren’t really concerned about who gets shot in North Philadelphia. Sanders was an affront to White Privilege. If you think your love of his socialist views is going to make a difference, you are wrong. 100% of Republicans and 70% of Democrats are not on that train, or they will jump before it reaches the station. Americans just don’t like to be equal, even when they are poor.
Even if by some miracle he became President. Congress would not have supported his plans. Newsflash, the president really doesn’t have that much power. His agenda wouldn’t have been passed.

Very in-the-box thinking, just like you’re told.
There was a reason the DNC didn’t want Bernie to win and it wasn’t simply “because he wasn’t going to win.” They were afraid of how he’d shake up the norms and halt their corporate ties. In hindsight, since Hilldawg lost, maybe they should have let him have a go and bad orange man would have never been in office.
FormerHoagie t1_j87de77 wrote
Clinton won the key primary states. California, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida and Texas. Clinton was a bad candidate but the numbers were still in her favor and she was most likely to win. Not a DNC conspiracy to prevent Sanders.

So many predictions. Jesus. Look at Zelensky for example. No one could have predicted this for his presidency. We have absolutely no way to know how a Bernie presidency would play out. This brings back a lot of wonderful memories. I lived in FDR Park that week, and was at the barricades. I turned down being a delegate, after working for the campaign, but I was able to be on the ground for the whole affair, relaying messages and goings on to the outside.
I met a lot of amazing people, and made friendships that will likely last my lifetime. I sat in a circle with Jill Stein and discussed the speech she had just given. I took selfies with Vermin Supreme and asked him when I was getting my damn pony. I spoke to hundreds, thousands of disillusioned young people, who knew that we were going to get robbed, but turned out in force anyway.
And even though the inevitable happened, and the democrats didn't follow their own rules, we woke an entire generation up to the corruption at every level of the electorate. And while I grow old and weary, I know that the fire is still lit in the hearts of the young. I only hope they can keep it burning.
