Honestly, to me it looks like the same process except with the paparazzi cat the whole background and parts of the cat were erased. The middle bits of the cat are the same in the original and the edit.

I'm currently only looking at it at my phone but... yeah, I think you're actually right. In which case you're most likely right about the catdog too. That is actually impressive. And a little scary.
