Which brewery do I go to for lunch? I've never been to Pitt before. I don't think I've ever had a beer from Pittsburgh before!

Second this but don’t park on railroad itself it’s illegal and they still occasionally tow. There is a garage right there. Also bring a rain coat we are supposed to have thunderstorms all day.

Then walk down to Aslin
Aslin is pretty mid, especially when compared to Cinderlands
Space is cool but the food is atrocious the 2-3 times I’ve had it. Beer is good though.
I really don’t like this model where you order from an app on your phone and they bring it from the kitchen. The prices are still too high for what you get
[deleted]
Or don't.
Why the hate? The Strip is changing and it's fun to explore the new things.
I support new things if they're good
[deleted]
I'll second this... plus decent food there too.
I agree. I really liked the food, but have only been once
East End Brewing is one of the oldest and best microbreweries in Pittsburgh.
Penn Brewery was the first here and is under new ownership and more of a traditional german brewery (kinda like Schmidt's)
Dancing Gnome, Hitchhiker, Cincerlands, etc are also all great mentions
we love Columbus btw and travel there a few times a year to visit friends
I just got some East End soda from them, they're both amazing and tasty.
Grist house (good outdoor area with fire pits) or hitchhiker brewery! Mastic trail brewery is not very lively but has lots of space, a parking lot, and some good brews and food.
This guy gets it. Ignore the rest.
Trace Brewing in Bloomfield. It’s BYOF if they don’t have a food truck, which they shouldn’t for lunch. Order takeout some a nearby restaurant and eat/drink at Trace.
Out of curiosity, why does Trace seem to be so highly rated?
I haven't really been impressed by their beers and they're awfully expensive for being rather simple styles. Location is interesting, but still falls short compared to others IMO.
I like their beer, but for me it’s more about the location. Nice indoor and outdoor seating, coffee in the morning. Plus they put on a lot of cool events. It’s close to me so I may be biased due to proximity, but it’s one of my go-to spots.
Figured it mostly boiled down to location for folks, but wasn't sure if there was something more. Definitely not a fan of their music nights given zero acoustic or volume control which makes it near impossible to hold a conversation.
As someone having to travel to get there, I would personally put it towards the bottom of my list. Wasn't a fan of the beers I tried there, and $7-8 for not even a full pint of beer is quite ridiculous
Yeah I normally like going in the afternoons when it’s a little more chill. And it seems like it’s always the sours and stouts that are expensive for smaller pours.. I usually stick to the lagers and pilsners there. Or a full 16oz pour of an IPA.
that's what's weird to me, is because it's some pretty simple styles that are being charged that much for only 11 oz according to their own website.
Dortmunder style is supposed to be cheap and simple to brew which is why they don't typically taste that great. I can't for the life of me figure out why they're treating it as some specialty brew that should cost a small fortune. When it comes to these German brews, they've really got it ass-backwards.
I just don't see any reason (other than they're trying to pass off their absurd rent and utility costs onto the customer) for charging $7-8 per drink when there's nothing really there to justify it (at least when it comes to your average drink that isn't high ABV or is a truly special brew). Their to-go prices seem to be fair, but am just baffled by how much extra they charge simply to be there in person.
Something I’ve noticed is that Trace runs expensive for drinks in-person, but reasonable for cans to go. Two Frays draft beers are on average more reasonable, but their to go prices are insane. Just comparing the two spots based on proximity to each other.
This is the way. Order Thai Gourmet and do Trace!
*thai cuisine (when Open) is the move.. both are good
Really, you’re doing this in here?
I’m doing what? you little outraged baby
Most breweries open at 4 or 5 and most are based around food trucks (I assume to avoid getting a certain incense).
That leaves you with Penn Brewery or Southern Tier. Neither would crack anyones top ten list. You’d be better off getting lunch somewhere then going to breweries later.
Cinderlands is open at 11:30.
Ah, there you go OP
You’re not showing yourself to be a reliable source of brewery info. Saying that they’re based around food trucks is a huge generalization
Go to Southern Tier because its Thursday which means they also have their $6 burger special. Burger and fries (double patty!) for $6.
Dang! I gotta try that sometime. Thanks for the heads up!
I've been unimpressed with their food the last few times I went.
Which is a shame, as I love their beer and location
I legitimately only ever go get the burger special. Imo it’s pretty good. I haven’t really had much of their other food but the $6 burgers have not done me wrong.
Dancing Gnome and Old Thunder are far and away my favorites right now. Not sure the lunch situation, but worth the trip over the 62nd St bridge for sure.

Just today! Around the zoo and children's hospital along the river it looks like. Ill be in a rental van so parking is a plus!
White panel van with no windows in the back?
Free candy
Dancing gnome and.... My mind fizzed out... Across the driver in Sharpsburg don't have food afaik. So avoid those. (they have food trucks but only evenings)
Hitchhiker! That's the other one.
neither of these are open until 4pm.
We have a lot of good breweries around there but most don't have food and parking situation for a van isn't great.
Maybe southern tier near the stadiums and I think you can get street parking somewhat easily.
Not a Pittsburgh brewery
Yeah. It isn't. I can't think of one close to the zoo that has food trucks during the day.
Street parking? He has a van. Park down by the river.
Miley Cyrus Concert Shuttle
Hop Farm in Lawrenceville would be my answer, but it doesn't open until 3. Pretty much all the good breweries in that area don't open until the late afternoon. Burghers is okay if you want local beer and food earlier than that, but it's really nothing to write home about imo.
I almost went there just because of the Bobs Burgers drawing out front. It was always so busy I figured it had to be good.
[deleted]
Hey, me too!
Strange Roots in Millvale is a good one. If you’re in the mood for a burger, Burgher in Lawrenceville has a great selection too - brewed I think at their Gibsonia location
Bit outside the city, but Spoonwood Brewing Co. in Bethel Park has good beer and excellent pizza.
Eh, better in the summer so you can avoid their maternity ward interior. But excellent food.
Really depends on what area of the city yinz’ll be in

Which neighborhood are you in? We literally have more than a dozen craft brewers within the city.
Grist House
On your way back goto Wooly pig brewery.
Definitely get some iron city its the best! Totally not mon river water and hops.

This is very bad advice

Church Breworks is famously a tourist trap with terrible food and beverage programs. Search on this subreddit for examples of the slop they charge 20$ for
Penn Brew is maligned by many beer snobs but they make decent beer and decent food. Their Dunkel remains one of the best in the city even if people don't like to admit that.
I know there was a management shake up of some sort at Church, but I haven't been in years since it was so bad. So I don't know if it has helped or not.
I've admittedly never been!
