Same here. As a kid, I never managed to get closer than maybe 50 yards away from one.

Now, it's a completely different story. I could easily walk up to one and chokeslam it, if I wanted to. They don't run away.

We have chickens, and I have a video from last year where my wife and I are standing in the backyard, on a June afternoon, taking dumb pictures, and a deer walked in between us (we were standing 5 feet apart) to come sniff a chicken that was near our feet, and it tripped over another hen it didn't notice.

My wife had to literally shove the deer with two hands to get it away from the chickens, who wanted nothing to do with it.

Everyone around us has motion security lights, and they'll bed down on my back patio, right up against the house, because they don't trip the lights on. All of our adjoining backyards are connected, and if you go out at dusk you can see them all gathering underneath trees, waiting for it to get dark.

I’ve seen a heard cross the highway near the squirrel hill tunnel.

I saw someone hit a deer going southbound on McKnight near the post office. They just clipped it and kept going but it was laying on the ground trying to get up. I was going northbound and turned around. Called the police and put my flashers on, I just didn’t want someone to come along and hit it again. Poor thing, it died before the police came. Sucked to be helpless.

I’ve seen half of a herd wait for a break in traffic to cross a suburban road when traffic interrupted the first ones. There’s probably a strong selective pressure for smart deer that tolerate humans.

They sleep in our yard. They move in herds sometimes, clip clopping down the street and slipping between cars. Sleeping here draws coyotes up from the ravines. We’re dodging them left and right out here in the suburbs. Went to pick up my kid’s prescription at the pharmacy drive thru last week and on the steep hillside up above and next to me were three practically within arm’s reach. I rolled up my window, jic they decided they liked my flowers in the bouquet sitting on the seat next to me and tried to fight me for it.

No joke, they ate my phlox and hostas to the ground right in front of me while I was sitting outside grilling on the patio, last spring. I yelled, I turned the hose on them, banged pots together. They just stared at me. Two neighbors on this street have collided with deer in the last few weeks. One in their driveway, another after they pulled up to a stop sign. They’re EVERYWHERE.

They bow hunt near here annually (to much consternation by many who don’t know about the diseases deer spread, or that where deer are there are bears and coyote that could eat their nasty, snapping, little ankle-biter nonstop barkers too)…

I love deer. They’re cute—-and also very tasty. But we have got to get these numbers their under control, for the health of the deer and for our own!

EllaMinnow t1_isz77w1 wrote

They just wander around the streets in Squirrel Hill when they run out of things to forage in Schenley Park (spoiler alert: they have foraged Schenley Park down to nothing already) and just like you I work second shift and see them on my street at least once a week. I'm on high alert for them but they're gonna get nailed by someone who isn't and everyone is gonna be unhappy.

And good luck with all the extra time for parts and labor due to short staff even when you do get in.

We hit one a week before Christmas last year. Nearly totaled it even though it was only body damage and it wasn’t legally drivable. Didn’t get the car back for over 6 weeks and that’s only because we were able to get in early due to a cancellation. The car insurance only covered a rental car for 30 days so I had to drive my wife to work for a couple weeks.

8

WellTimedPoop t1_isyhw2g wrote

Yeah we hit one right before thanksgiving last year and it was around new years that we got it back. Geico were refusing to pay for OEM parts and wanted to use crappy third parties (according to my body shop), so that added a lot of time too. And then they took forever to pay him, so I almost had to pay out of pocket. Switched insurance companies after that

Hit a deer earlier this year in my subaru. Took almost 2 months to fix due to parts availability. Luckily my insurance covered the rental the entire time.

Wild-Professional-40 t1_isxti2k wrote

Yep - my wife hit one in early September in her van, the shop scheduled her to look at the vehicle in early October, and then finally scheduled her repair for early December. Figure she'll get it back maybe February or so.

Lesson learned: Now's a good time to check your rental car insurance coverage. We've got $30/day for 30 days max which means we'll mostly be out of pocket for a reasonable replacement, especially when you consider rising rental car costs. You don't need it until you need it.

8

LazarusBird t1_isybll9 wrote

Yeah not deer related but I hit something on the road that gave me a flat and also a bit of body damage. Dealer replaced the tire but suggested a body shop for the rest. I called 5 different body shops and earliest appointment just to take it in and get an estimate for insurance was a month out.

Support your local hunter or take up hunting yourself.

Pay for another tag/the processing fee and not only will you have a freezer full of meat but you'll reduce the chance of people hitting a deer ever so slightly.

Its a win-win.

I've tried, for years. The biggest hurdle, in all honesty, are the people who like to feed them and think they're pretty. These are mainly elderly people who have nothing better to do than go to local meetings and drown out everyone else with their bullshit.

My neighborhood is full of people who never leave their homes, never open their windows, don't do shit to their gardens except fill multiple bird feeders every day to intentionally attract deer and other vermin.

If they are locked up and frozen in place, lay on the horn. They run away from loud noise immediately. Obviously, consider surroundings. It's not an option where that noise might drive them into other lanes of moving traffic, but on a two way with no opposing traffic it moves them in direct lines away from the horn, and, most importantly, overrides that deer-in-the-headlights thing.

you're allowed to hunt deer in your yard in city limits as long as you're 50 yards away from an occupied structure for bowhunting and 150 for shotgun. I've recently read a few articles on this. Here's one. https://pittsburghquarterly.com/articles/the-urban-deerhunter/

GargantuanWitch t1_it2loqf wrote

StarOriole t1_isy3z8z wrote

That article is seriously lacking in timespans. I just had to do way too much math to figure out that the 1 in 52 odds of hitting a deer is a per year number as compared to a during your life number. I originally assumed it was a per year number, but the comparison to writing a New York Times best seller threw me off.

(It turns out the NYT best seller number is a per book number -- about 0.5% of books that are written are NYT best sellers.

(In terms of deer, there are about 2 million animal collision insurance claims in the US per year, so about 0.5% of the US population files an insurance claim for hitting an animal each year. Since the stats given are that there's a 1% chance for Americans to hit a deer, elk, moose, or caribou, it seems more likely that only about half of them file insurance claims, as compared to assuming there's only 1% odds of hitting a deer-like animal during your life but that many times more Americans are filing animal collision insurance claims for hitting non-deer-like animals. Assuming that's right, the 1 in 52 number for Pennsylvanians must be annual.)
