Brownsville looks so much better from the air.

Yeah, it's really a shame. If you're driving through it and squint a little you can imagine what it might be like if it had the kind of little shops and businesses like you'd find in, say, Ligonier. But it's just not to be.

I always joked that you could film a zombie movie in downtown Brownsville. It was eerily deserted when I was in high school in the 00s

Going back to the 90's, the town was in pretty crappy shape. An investor bought up most of the downtown on the assumption that riverboat gambling would be legalized. It wasn't. He has, since that time, pretty much ignored the place, letting it decay to the sad point that we see today.

Yeah still is, they did demo the old hospital and nursing home finally, but the abandoned hotel is still there, so is the train station and the couple abandoned banks. The train station was very funny to get in to, the door that said “enter” was unlocked. 😂 it’s like a mini shopping mall inside of it, very cool layout.

It was never rebuilt after the flood in the 1980s. Real sad. My gram is 86 and she still talks about the shops and boutiques downtown.

They filmed a decent chunk of “I’m not okay with this” in Brownsville. Not a zombie movie, but there was some creepy stuff.

Until they tore down the hospital and nursing home. They also try to crack down on urbexers, the police will enter the buildings now despite not legally being allowed too.

vonHindenburg t1_isqmdtg wrote

A decade or so ago, the fire chief sent an open letter to the mayor saying that he wouldn't order his men to enter most of the buildings because they were so unsound. At that point, I'd say we can ignore the niceties.

mvps412 t1_isr3oet wrote

So it’s actually the mayor and the “community watch” person who is entering the buildings and handing out business cards from the mayor with warnings from the police on the back of them. When I first started exploring, we could just sneak around the town and no one cared. Then people started discovering the town more and more and the influx of explorers into the town to explore the places is what eventually got the mayor to take action. The hospital was so funny though, they should have let that fall in on itself. It was so close to doing just that.

I pick up Montgomery’s card and actually finger it, for the sensation the card gives off to the pads of my fingers.

“Nice, huh?” Price’s tone suggests he realizes I’m jealous.

“Yeah,” I say offhandedly, giving Price the card like I don’t give a shit, but I’m finding it hard to swallow.

First saw that town on the series 'I Am Not OK With This', went there slightly afterwards to take a few photos of the riverfront. Been meaning to get back there to shoot some more.

Nice shot!

It was on Netflix, sadly only 1 season before getting cancelled. Just set there, but could have been any town.

Is everything still boarded up downtown?

lego22499 t1_ispjz4l wrote

Yeah pretty much, there are some businesses still around, and tbh I think the sandwich shop in town is great. Outside of a handful of businesses though, the main strip on the left of this picture is 80% boarded up/broken into abandoned buildings.

Fiddles??? I'm almost positive that's still there and open, got some breakfast there bout 4 years back. The restaurant I'm talking about is called "the sandwich shop". It's a beatles themed deli with slapper bagels.
