Did you like it? I know it’s a Level 1 trauma center, and things can get pretty crazy. Would you recommend working there?

I know the neighborhood it’s in is not the best, but I’ve applied to literally every other hospital in the area. I’ve been applying for the past 3-4 months, and it took forever to get an interview.

I interviewed at both Children’s and West Penn, and was rejected from both. Now that I got an offer from Mercy, I would be stupid not to take it.

What’s Mercy’s ED like?

Mercy ED is busy busy. You will get a lot of experience. Working for UPMC is working for UPMC. You will be a cog and many aspects of your employee contract will be non negotiable. Your pay might be lower than average for the area. You can try to negotiate but usually they won’t budge. I know some of the staff and Mercy ED has some great people to work with and for but it’s still UPMC. Safety and parking should be no problem. You’re right up against the Blvd and garage is attached to the hospital. Never had problems with safety.

If West Penn isn’t hiring, I’d say go for it. It’s still UPMC though. I’d rather work at Mercy than Presby ED so there’s that. All hospitals need the staff, especially nursing.

Why mercy over Presby? Just wondering from a patient perspective

Presby is more of a catch all (esp subspecialty patients) with some really complex patients that rotate in and out like it’s a second home at times. Most docs will send their patients to Presby for any and all emergencies before Mercy. Still see similar patient landscape at Mercy. Not a good or bad thing. I just prefer more turnaround which Mercy might offer.

this might not make a difference to you but just fyi that since mercy is technically a catholic hospital the health insurance you receive from working there won't cover any contraception or abortion related costs

I don't work at Mercy, but I do work right beside it. I would say as long as you don't go roaming around the streets off the hospital campus you should have zero safety concerns. Even if you do, the worst thing I have dealt with are some crackhead beggers that will approach you for money, but just ignore them or tell them you are broke too.

I use the hospital cafeteria for lunch sometimes, it's really good and sometimes they give me the employee discount and I have a great meal and coffee for like 4 bucks.

Duquesne University is right beside mercy, I always see doctors and nurses walking campus or smoking on their breaks. It is extremely safe there, very well policed, so if you do need to go somewhere to get away there is that.

I will say this. My father was rushed to the Mercy ER over a month ago. He has been in critical care, a step down unit and a rehab unit.

Outside of two lazy nursing assistants who were too busy playing with their phones to even be polite, everyone has been fantastic. It is an awesome hospital. Especially in the critical care floor, where the doctors and nurses were incredible.

I don't know much about pay & benefits but I know that they are short staffed on nurses and they work 12 hour shifts.

So, in my opinion, Mercy is great.

I don't think West Penn is as busy but I haven't been there in years.
