That’s the real kicker, innit? What could the commonwealth have done with $1-$2 billion besides bribe a fossil fuel company?

I hope the jerbs have good health plans. People are going to need them.

Lol, that place is 90% automated.

It is. Only about 500 jobs for a facility that stretches across almost 2 miles

JERBZ!!!! WE NEED SUBSIDIES TO CREATE JEEEEEEERBZ
chuckie512 t1_j14lolb wrote
Wait, I thought the current problem was no one wants to work?
Rook22Ti t1_j14v00d wrote
Well sometimes it's about people wanting to work for a living wage, sometimes it's about nobody wanting to work. Sometimes it's just about spewing VOCs for profit.
chuckie512 t1_j14w5db wrote
I agree, I was just making a joke.
No one wants to work, there's vacancies everywhere, but these 600 jobs are critical to the economy.
mmphoto412 t1_j14ijz9 wrote
Yea all 400 jerbs
Equivalent_Alps_8321 t1_j169il3 wrote
only 400 r u serious?
mmphoto412 t1_j1727n9 wrote
I’ve seen figures between 400 and 600.

it was 100% paid for by taxes?
chuckie512 t1_j16di7p wrote
$1.6 billion of it was.
All for less than 600 jobs.
Equivalent_Alps_8321 t1_j16evui wrote
how much it cost total?
pAul2437 t1_j16ll6k wrote
They get those tax credits over 25 years.
pAul2437 t1_j16lj0s wrote
This is extremely misleading. They got tax credits
pAul2437 t1_j16lg3a wrote
They were tax credits. So same amount of taxes received as if they didn’t build it

As someone who works in air permitting, that is a fuck ton of VOC.
Equivalent_Alps_8321 t1_j16ag8h wrote
what is normal amount?
mooslan t1_j16xz1q wrote
Depends on the application, but generally you want as few as possible. The threshold to be a Title V major source of VOC is 100 tons per year.

Having worked in this industry in the past, I can tell you that Shell will turn that permit on its head whenever it suits them.

The news reporter said another violation could lead to fines as if that’s a consequence. These companies make so much money that the cost of fines is so inconsequential, it doesn’t change anything about the way they operate. US Steel has been operating in this manner for decades. They’ve been fined so many times and it makes no difference. The fines either need to be an amount that actually affects their bottom line or they should be shut down until they can operate within the parameters that do not harm public health.

I am aware this is likely not related to shell - but holy Christ the air was bad today. Walked outside this morning to a thick haze, tasted like breathing in directly from your cars exhaust pipe. Purple Air monitor was showing over 160 for PM2.5

Grew up in Beaver, moved away 2 years ago before the plant was operational. When I was home visiting family I couldn’t believe the haze, and the smell in the air. Unbelievable. 25 years of living there and never experienced anything like this. Locals were 50/50 on if they noticed it. But my fiancé and I sure did… very sad.

chuckie512 t1_j15jd52 wrote
I mean I know housing is a complex issue, but how didn't you know about the plant?
Twin4401 t1_j15jjaz wrote
I did but I didn’t even cross my mind. I was just worried about distance to work and home
chuckie512 t1_j15jvjt wrote
Well I wish you the best. Hopefully the DEP proves us all wrong and reigns them in.

Serious question. Why are we seeing so many news articles that are focused on op eds from one random person they found in a parking lot?
Surely this was not worth the time to to write to anyone except the advertisers?

My wife's cousin lives about a mile away feom there. I give it about a year before their family starts showing health issues
chuckie512 t1_j13yto5 wrote
Remember we paid shell to build this plant. They're not going to worry about fines that'll never catch up to the amount of subsidies they've received.
