I found mine on Zillow. Contacted 30-40 places before someone contacted me back. Felt like a lot of the places I contacted ghosted

I found my current apartment on Craigslist and it's awesome.

My previous apartment in federal hill I found on fb market. It was also great.

Just don't pay any application fee or deposit without actually seeing the place first..

In the last 4 years I’ve only ever gotten 3 call backs from Zillow apts that I’ve reached out to schedule a viewing. When they require you to apply and pay an application fee first is lowkey a scam. They just accept the fee and never actually give the apt tour.

All that matters is that you sort by new. Anything more than a few days old is going to be a dead listing, overpriced, or have some serious red flags (why wouldnt the first 100 people who emailed in the first 3 weeks according to the listing have filled it?).

I walk my dog all over Fox Point. Considering the high density of students I've been surprised at the number of "Apt for rent" signs I've seen on the neighborhood triple deckers throughout fall. (Not sure I've seen one since Dec 1 though. But then, I'm not looking.)

Doesn't help out-of-towners. And presumably they are also listed online somewhere too? Just chiming in here to confirm that there are vacancies past Sep 1, even on College Hill.

The Sep 1st thing is exclusively a Boston phenomena. No other cities, as far as I've ever heard, have such a bizarre seasonal operating transition (and I've lived in much bigger college towns that still didnt operate like that).

The rental signs are hit or miss. For example, the Biledou rental signs in Wayland square have been there since I moved here a decade ago. Some get changed out or are temporary, but a lot are permanent fixtures on properties that may or may not have openings.
