I'm trying to find a new gym around the johnston/cranston area but am having some trouble

Most the gyms I found are personal trainers doing classes, crossfit or planet fitness. The only thing I am looking for are heavy weights and a clean place that doesn't charge $80 a month for classes I won't use.

Does anyone have suggestions?

I mean I had my doubts, but I've found that Planet Fitness really isn't bad at all. And its as cheap as you're going to find.

I like edge fitness on Garfield Street. Can be a bit busy but it has a very solid range of equipment/weights. Also, very affordable.

I was under the impression that it was widely known that PFs do not have barbells, squat racks, or power cages, as well as having the "Lunk Alarm" etc etc. I don't think I've ever been in one but I've heard and read all this repeatedly over the years.

Edit: I mean Olympic barbells and plates, not fixed-weight bars

There’s an LA Fitness in the Garden City shopping area next to LLBean. I just joined and it’s not bad, they could have more squat racks but at least they have some

I’m in Johnston and have a few memberships. I’m an old school lifter, and I’m obsessed with Power House in CT and General Fitness in Fall River… but those are for special occasions sadly. Instead, I make due with Work out World in East Providence (there’s one in Warwick but it isn’t as good), LA Fitness in Cranston, and on days when I really don’t have time to go that far, Planet Fitness in Johnston.

Surprisingly, I can get a good back or arms workout in at Planet Fitness. Chest and Legs aren’t great there, and shoulders are mediocre. If you’re serious about lifting and can plan accordingly, it doesn’t hurt to have go to gyms for certain things. I don’t mind driving to EP on a Saturday morning for legs, for example, but I’m not going to sit on the 6/10 for 30 minutes on a Thursday afternoon for it when I can do back at planet fitness.

And I’m rambling. I have zero hobbies aside from lifting and being from Johnston so this post hit all the right points lol

yeah, PF doesn't have regular barbells. Instead they have smith machines, which are barbells on a guide that you can rack at any point if you need to. You put plates on them same as you would a barbell. I squat and deadlift with them just fine.

Yeah but they’re always so busy, no matter when I’ve gone. I’m thinking about springing for a membership though. They have some killer machines that I haven’t seen anywhere else local.

Look to see if your health insurance company offers a discount membership for gyms too.
