(All M25) I go out to eat with my two friends about once a month. It never fails, that at some point during the meal the server does something that they dislike and they use that as a justification to not leave a tip. It could be the slightest thing.

Years ago their excuse was always “we’re broke college kids, no way I’m leaving a tip haha!” But now it’s always “it took too long,” or “they took 5 minutes to get my beer” etc…

I know that they don’t really care about service, they just do this cause they are cheap. Plus, they kind of think it’s funny.

It’s aggravating to me though, not just because it’s wrong, but because I end up having to compensate for all three of us cause I feel bad. I’ve tried explaining that to them, but they tell me stuff like “haha well just don’t compensate for us then! We’re not tipping!”

Other than this my friends are pretty good people, they just do this one stupid thing.

I’m tired of leaving a tip for three people, but I don’t know what to do about it. Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

TL;DR: My friends always find an excuse to not leave a tip, and I have to compensate for them.

I have a hard time believing this if they use the tiniest reasons to not tip very hard-working service staff. I mean, this alone makes them by definition bad people, full stop.

Advice? Tell them you will no longer go out with them. That's what I'd do, I would not be able to be associated with that, it's so insanely disrespectful of someone that relies on you, especially larger parties, to pay their damn rent. And you're a damn saint for covering the difference, you should stop though, this isn't your responsibility.

Almost all problems servers have are not their fault, they are usually just the "messenger":

  • they aren't responsible for bad food
  • they aren't responsible for food that is late
  • they aren't responsible for bad management

I find it's quite rare that i can attribute a problem in a restaurant to a server

Yeah I try to explain the last bit to them, that things aren’t usually the server’s fault. But they don’t care.

It's because they don't really have a valid reason, they are just being cheap.

You have absolutely no say in what others do.

If they don't want to tip. That's on them.

You know who they are when you choose to go out with them.

You either accept it. Pay for their tips. Or don't go out with them.

I'd stop going out to eat with them, but that's just me.

As a server, I'd stop going out with those ppl. I don't think ppl who refuse to leave a tip are good ppl at all. They are screwing over the same broke college student, or worse, every time.

But they know that and don't care. So they aren't good ppl. They literally aren't paying for part of their bill. That's criminal.

I’d stop going out with them. They’re assholes. If you don’t want to go back to the same place and have someone spitting in your burger, ditch these asshats.
