Now that the weather's finally stabilizing, it's time to think about picnic season. I hope to grab something from Nile and take it to Libby Hill sometime in the next month - but how about you?

My spouse and I like to take a homemade picnic over to Jefferson Park in n warm evening and just sit in the grass. It’s pretty great.

Poll working again for our second special election in as many months-- this time for residents of the old 9th State Senate District (not the new one! this is very confusing!) to replace now-Representative McClellan for the veto and budget work remaining in the General Assembly this year. The winner will serve for all of eight months or so and immediately have to campaign in the new district, but margins in the Senate are slim and there will probably be some important votes on gubernatorial amendments and such before the GA's work is done.
It's been sleepy as hell so far, unsurprisingly for a serial special election to elect a state legislator to a bare stub of a remnant term, but I'm hoping we see a bit more turnout after folks get off work.
On days I'm NOT doing that, I'm a fan of Libby Hill at sunset this time of year, or taking our sweet doofus of a dog for a decently long hike someplace we can avoid seeing too many other dogs (she loves humans but isn't a fan of most other canines).

We will walk over to truckle cheesemongers and get a cheese board. Then stop at Sheppard farms for a bottle of wine and hit up the vmfa. I spend an insane amount of time on the lawn there when it's nice out.
Relaxing, sunning, board games, wine nights. It's the best.
My "secret" picnic spot is texas beach or the meadows. Love watching the river while we eat.

Is anyone else not really a picnic fan? If I'm eating outside, it's a granola bar or piece of fruit while hiking. You sit with food somewhere and you just attract flies, get sand in your food, your trash blows away from you.

Celebrating the life of Harold my cat today after he crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday at 15. He had a good life filled with adventures and gave me endless memories. Had more of a social life than a lot of people I know. Already missing him.

VT has more than pulled their weight for the ACC since joining. Believe it is the only school with ACC championships in Football, Basketball and Women’s hoops. Not bad for a school that was overlooked the first 50 years of the ACC and looked down at as an original candidate for expansion. Now time to win the natty so everyone can shutup about them never having a national championship in any team sport. VT should build a statue of Mark Warner for forcing UVAs hand to make them join the ACC.

Will take literally any excuse to picnic. My spouse & I do a periodic hike where we park at belle isle, go down and cross at the nickle bridge & walk back. We usually end up stopping to picnic at Riverview Cemetery, but there are a lot of scenic stops to break out a sandwich at.

A good thick picnic blanket thing from Amazon. It keeps the wet grass away from you, and make sure you have a wine opener :) it's not camping so I keep it verrrrrrry simple.
Bring my soft side cooler, couple red solo cups, cheese, crackers, salami, and picnic blanket.

Crackers or tortillas with summer sausage and a block of cheese is the only way besides granola, trail mix or dried fruit when I’m hiking. Just bring a pocket knife.

Yeah and why does picnic food smell and taste different? I swear I can make the same thing and eat it outside at home and it tastes totally different. Maybe it's because I hate picnics...
And picnics are such a modern thing too. Back in the day when you had to kill or grow everything I'm pretty sure nobody said, "Hey let's take our shit and go eat it somewhere else."
Watch Naked and Afraid while eating and you will never look at picnics the same ever again.

It's tough! We've had good experiences at Byrd Park, away from Barker Field-- or close enough to play "dog park tv," where we lavish her with treats for looking at the dogs but not freaking out. The best spot we found when we lived on the Southside was Drewry's Bluff. It's a good loop through the woods, some river views, and almost never any other dogs. Only problem is that the trail in is the same as the trail out, so if you run into trouble there you don't have as many ways to dodge. On the north side, Bryan Park is good at off hours, especially if you stick around the lakes and are decently good at spotting dogs far off.
