I’m a bit taken aback by the extent of the redactions in the released version of the report. Almost nothing significant is disclosed about either the deficiencies OR the proposed corrective actions.

Because of the CSX ROW and the need to maintain strict grade separation for public safety, there’s not going to be a cheap solution but it appears the abutments and piers are in acceptable condition. You would think that with all the $$$ sloshing around RVA some friends of the park system would offer funding solutions IF the public could understand what the options are. Like a new spans on existing substructures.

City is going to drag its feet for ages and next summer someone is gonna get hurt crossing tracks and canal.

I just wonder the logistics of replacing that thing. They make those bridges prefab so you can just drop them on the supports, and they can’t be that expensive compared to other big projects. But there’s no road down to it, it’s going to have to come in by rail and get lifted up. There’s a company in town called Cranemasters which specializes in just that, but it’d take coordination with the railway and a lot of planning.

I don't anticipate this bridge being repaired and/or reopened in the next 3 years.

Because, I've recently posted on here how another city of Richmond infrastructure project (Jahnke Road Improvement Project) has been delayed for 4+ years and the publicly posted reason has been "ongoing construction scheduling coordination with the railroad company". And, this project is fully federally funded but still it is being delayed so much.

If the city doesn't immediately have the funding for the full replacement, then there could be a 5+ year process of city leaders addressing it with urgency, soliciting design proposals from qualified architectural/engineering firms, going through the paces of the public bid and procurement process, and finally planning and completing the construction.

Your estimate for a 5+ year process is most likely. These types of projects are very slow moving, especially when they aren’t politically charged.

Me too - I mean so many black redactions!

Is it normal to redact something like that? It seem very odd. Are they afraid the terrorist will take out the bridge? It sort of needs to happen anyway and would save the city money
