Same question here. I heard one of the researchers state that one of these elephants “contained” 2500 daily meals. I guess you need to form a party to kill one, if there are 50 people they would have been able to feed themselves and 200 relatives for 10 days. As it’s stated in another study about Neanderthals cooking crab over fires, if you cook part of the meat, or if it’s cold enough, storing over 10 days seems possible.

Depending on where they lived, they could have frozen meat or dried meat to preserve it, and you can smoke meat anywhere if you build something to trap the smoke in around the fire. If there’s a party to hunt and kill the elephant the party can all chip in to preserve it.
