Living organisms need to be able to distinguish between things they should fear and things they shouldn't in order to survive. They must be able to respond defensively to cues that have previously been linked to a threat, even before the threat itself manifests. The scientific term for this process of determining which signs signal a threat and which do not is "the fear memory recall."
