how to stay on top of advances?

I often encounter people in comment sections and the like talking about some obscure "upcoming new x" and "upcoming new y".

How do y'all find out about these things? Where should I sign up to get a complete image of what technological projects are underway and coming soon, etc? I mean this for any field -- AI, longevity, fusion, etc.

Magazines and forums / blogs, insider knowledge (i.e. working in or knowing someone who works in the field), and the like, probably. There are likely dozens of publications but one that's been around for a while and isn't trying to sell you anything will typically be most reliable.

Maybe try searching for 'leading "___" companies' (fill in the blank) and using the names of top results, or their websites, to search around for blogs or document archives.

NASA does release papers etc, and I believe CERN publishes things directly as well.

Eventually it’s going to be impossible to keep up with everything happening around us. I wouldn’t worry too much about keeping up with every little thing. Pretty soon you will have an AI that can give you all new information as a personal assistant.

Seriously, if ChatGPT could get internet access alongside an embedded app in your smartphone we’d have this right now practically. Although I believe OpenAI says giving it internet access right now is risky.

Last Week in AI, multiple subs which post news articles, a collection of serious media sources (The Economist, IEEE Spectrum, etc), and the occasional poke around arXiv.

I don't have anything specific, but treat your search engine results like a rabbit hole, and you're bound to find something; even Yahoo or BuzzFeed articles have a source article which they're bound to cite, and which will probably be hosted alongside other similar publications.

There's also that "arxiv.org" (sp?) website which publishes research papers and experiments submitted by the scientists conducting active studies.
