Google will announce a ton of A.I. products in its I/O event in May, 2023 but with GPT-4 and ChatGPT, will it be enough to respond to Microsoft and the pace of OpenAI's momentum?

There is no doubt google is superior, the question is, will Google show their real capability this time? I've read some comments saying that Google might fall behind, but I seriously doubt it because they are still way superior and they are likely to continue being superior, so even if Open AI releases a super AI (GPT-4), all it takes for Google to regain their throne is to release an even more superior AI (I'm pretty sure they have one or several ones). Google is taking its time, the moment they make a serious move we know that's them trying to say, check mate.

If they do, it wont be free and they will cancel the project in 9 months.

'They are superior, because they are superior' is the essence of what you've just said.

When did I state "They are superior, because they are superior" my statement was "I seriously doubt it because they are still way superior and they are likely to continue being superior". There is a clear difference, my statement talks about them being superior and that they will also be superior in the future, but I nowhere defend why they are superior because that wasn't my intention with that statement... The key is that the intention of my statement was to inform why they are likely to win the AI race rather than to argue why they are superior.

I took it as they are superior because they have the internal knowledge and talent and years of experience at the bleeding edge of AI research, so based on those circumstances they are well-situated to continue their dominance in the field.

Exciting stuff. If one thing can be attributed to ChatGPT at the very least it's actually kicking off a ton of renewed interest in the field. Without the public splash and interest from Microsoft the timeline likely would have been pushed back quite a bit.

Regardless, competition here is good.

I think the bigger question is will they release it. Like they can show it all day long. But look at the Google grave yard. They are pretty famous for not letting things go to public and then out of no where killing it off.

Like I don't think they will kill it off. But IDK if they will bring it to the public.

They can compete. They have the technology. Question is, can they do so without destroying their revenue?

Now Google has pressure to use more ai in their search results but have to dance the line of good enough results that have ads this more revenue for Google

Competition is great, but we all know Google will hype it up for 1 year and then silently cancel it or throw it on the back burner and effectively cancel it through neglect.

This raises a good point, which I hadn’t considered. Maybe what is actually so mind-blowing and disruptive about GPT-n is just that it isn’t trying to sell them anything.

Yep, this is where I'm at. They showed their AI scheduling a haircut ages ago, but Google Assistant is still extremely dumb compared to Chat GPT

Until they put something I can use in my hand, they are a vaporware company on the way to go down in history next to all the other huge names that didn't adapt to change

Google will put out a lot of A.I. products in 2023, but most of them won't pan out and they may not find a "killer utility application" like ChatGPT in quite the same way!

If Bing managed to steal market share from Google and in search Advertising, it's also a battle of Azure vs. Google Cloud don't forget.

I think a great many people on this sub are just dumb. Like what you were saying was pretty clear and absolutely not what that guy claims you were saying lol

Demis Hassabis, did say they are working on making LLMs that are more factual or reliable. Google is afraid of failure rate of LLMs. They don't want to put something into the market that gives out too many wrong results.

If their tech is around as good as ChatGPT, I understand their apprehension. ChatGPT reaches the level being just good enough to be dangerous. And Google is already dealing with an abundance of regulatory scrutiny. An AI that can easily instruct you on doing criminal activity, or confidently spits out misinformation as fact was likely a can of worms they'd rather kick down the road.

People really do want to use this technology though, so their hand is being forced.

i think it is going to be difficult for them to avoid the death spiral. Lets say 20% of their users migrate to Cgpt or other Chat service. they then need to put up 20% more ads to make the same amount of money. the remaining users then think wow there are so many more ads then before im going to try Cgpt. and the cycle continues. We are now at peak Google. this is what happens to monopolies when their business models are disrupted by new technology, google is no different.
