This shit needs to die. High tops do not protect ankles at all. It's a complete myth

41

belizeanheat t1_jbkdi2x wrote

You don't want to only wear high tops, because you want to build ankle strength by letting them be completely unsupported.

But on gameday, for many guys they absolutely do help. It's not like it's rocket science... A little extra support in a particular area is always going to prevent some minor tweaks, but if you always have that support, your ankles won't be as strong

4

YellowStreetLamp t1_jbkne5t wrote

Even the gameday part is not true at least not really. It's like saying a t-shirt will protect you from a gunshot.

Yes they do in theory provide some support but the support they give is so little that it would literally never prevent an injury. The ammount of force needed to injure your ankle is so far beyond what a little bit of fabric or leather can protect you from that it's not even worth mentioning as actual protection.

2

InnovativeFarmer t1_jbk9u6b wrote

I used to wear high tops almost exclusively playing sports. I broke my lower leg and dislocated my ankle when a player did a take slide. It was bad. Really close to being a compound fracture. They had to cut the cleats off because they were high tops. I learned that day if its bad enough high tops arent going to stop it. They just get in the way.

MattWey t1_jbjkypr wrote

No joke, I wonder if a lot of his injures could be avoided if he had a bit more mass? We seen other players twist their ankle like that and walk it off, but KD's legs just keep on giving up.

HeisenbergBlueOG t1_jbjoejc wrote

Bro looks exactly the same as he did when he entered the league. Doesn't look he puts any effort whatsoever in improving his physique 🤣

14

Quiet_Overlord t1_jbk2ynj wrote

Yeah who knows this might be because he's actually clean instead of on PED's.

It at least seems that Durant's physique used to be a lot more common than the beasts that walk of the locker rooms these days...

belizeanheat t1_jbkdtx0 wrote

Kevin Durant with his shirt off looks like a wet dish cloth. It's insane that he's one of the greatest ever while looking like some abnormally weak blend of prepubescent and geriatric.

But seriously, everyone talking about his frame and stuff... He's just old and has a history of a couple bad injuries. That shit is never the same again

2

someguyprobably t1_jbk0iqh wrote

Yep. And that’s part of why he will never be remembered as one of the greats. One of the most talented? Sure. But not a great one, not a top 10. A debatable top 25. He will fade slowly into irrelevance soon after he retires. Sad but true. He wishes he were Bron but he’s not. He’s Steph curry’s accessory, he’s the nets kryptonite, he’s just a cupcake.

Practical_Monk_769 t1_jbpljjf wrote

Ok and who tf are you? You won’t even be forgotten bc no one remembers you today lmao

rjcarr t1_jbk52b1 wrote

I mean, he twisted his ankle. It doesn't really matter how heavy I am, I can vary by about 50 lbs, but my ankles are always skin and bone. Looking at this guy's ankles, he seems the same way. More mass would just put more force on the ankles.

16

Smellmyhand t1_jbky790 wrote

If he weighed what people who say this type of stuff think he should weigh, he never would’ve came back from that broken foot.

2

MattWey t1_jbl10s7 wrote

How do you know that? My question was coming from actual curiosity and as far as I heard, with correct training you can increase not just muscle size and strength but joint, ligament and tendon strength.

Of course KD has word class trainers and specialist, but does he follow their advice? Knowing his antics he probably doesn't.

−1

second_time_again t1_jbjq5j5 wrote

I don’t see how more weight coming down on an ankle as it turns would’ve helped. It’s not like the tendons are less prone to injury if someone puts on muscle (or fat).

1

DM725 t1_jbjs3sa wrote

Actually if you're lower body is more muscular it takes the load off of your joints, ligaments and tendons.

21

ballsohaahd t1_jbk3yxi wrote

He’s an nba basketball player he obviously has strong legs, skinny legs can still be strong Durant was quite athletic in his 20s.

He went to step not even very hard and either his shoe slipped or got caught and his ankle rolled over. ‘More muscular’ legs wouldn’t help that plus he just came back from his knee injury so legs could have been a little heavy.

4

DM725 t1_jbk4elb wrote

Constant lower body injuries is a sign.

1

ballsohaahd t1_jbk5965 wrote

joe2352 t1_jbjvmb8 wrote

In middle school I fucked up my ankles a lot. Multiple sprains to each and one really bad fracture, sprain, and ligament damage. Had to get with a physical therapist and started doing basically ankle workouts specifically to strengthen the muscles on my feet and around my ankles. Only had one foot injury in the 17 years since.

Kevin Durant rapidly became the poster child for load management.

While his peers of the same generation have been able to draw out their prime and refine their game and abilities, Kev has been hurt. Kev's last actual serviceable year of NBA play was his 30 year old year.

It was a hell of a career. But if his performance in last years playoffs was any indication, especially in comparison to 5-6 years ago, this guy is fuckin toast.

No seriously, last years performance was abysmal. He was gettin ripped like a nerdy girl in PE class playing against a competitive boy from the varsity team. It was sad to watch. He's slow and weak now.

−2

Ptricky17 t1_jbl13rx wrote

It was a hell of a career? By what standards?

Dude was carried to his only chip by one of the most stacked rosters in NBA history. His contributions to that roster were absolutely not significant to the final outcome.

He hasn’t led a team to any kind of deep playoff run since the season he left OKC. Yeah he had some good seasons purely from the point of view stats, but his overall impact on the game was pretty negligible. At this point I wouldn’t even say he’s worthy of admittance to the HoF. No legacy.

iFLED t1_jbl280h wrote

Damn and I thought I was a KD hater

1

TheKReaLB t1_jblfs6i wrote

You are a total moron and thankfully history will not reflect the garbage you are spewing here.

He has 2 chips not one. So for you to say he was carried to his “only” chip is objectively wrong. Secondly, I’ve never heard of a 2x finals MVP being accused of being carried until now. Truly remarkable. He’s made 4 finals appearances, won 2, won finals MVP both times, and 1 regular season MVP, 4 scoring titles, and is a top 5-10 offensive player of all time. He will waltz into the HOF on the first ballot.

The warriors team was obviously stacked, but they had failed to win the finals the year before he signed. He was clearly the best player on those teams when he was there. When we talk about Klay and Steph we don’t discount those 2 rings. Those guys wanted him there and actively recruited him. Yet all the blame/hate is used to tarnish his accomplishments and not theirs.

He is a top 20 player of all time with ease. For you to say he doesn’t belong in the HOF because of some hate boner you have for a free agency decision he made is embarrassingly biased.
